Actually the best ab workout isn't doing crunches but one that involved an internal contraction of the muscles deep inside. I teach this to my aquatic students, but I also demonstrate how they can do it on land. Standing with feet slightly apart and knees not locked, interlock fingers of the hands - palms downward. Bring hands about chest level, then pressing hands down, use the sound psssstttt. As you breath out the abs will contract and the pelvis will tilt forward slightly. (do not force the pelvis tilt - if you are doing this correctly you will have it happen). Keep pssstttting until all the air is out of your lungs.

This can also be done sitting in a chair. The chair must have a firm seat (like a dining room chair). Feet firmly on the floor, hands interlaced again, push the hands forward as you pssssttttt. The abs will contract and the back begin to push into the seat back as the pelvis tilts forward. A lot of my students who work in an office find this a good way to strengthen their abs as well as relax the back during the day.

My students who spend a lot of time in the car, especially in traffic do it in the car with hands on the steering wheel. (caution: do no try to do this while actively driving as it can force your foot down on the gas. You can do this while foot on the brake at a red light, while stuck in traffic or when completely stopped.

This exercise was given to me by one of the top rehab. specialist in the country and is also used to strengthen the back and pelvic girdle. You will not only see results in the ab area, but better posture, stronger back and better balance.

Happy pssstttting!
