It goes back to the original sin in the Garden of Eden. One of the most common things that we do to prove that we are sinners is LIE. Picture a chain hanging from heaven and you are hanging on the bottom end. When you told that first lie that one link in the chain broke. So you need to be saved from the penalty of sin, and that is what Jesus Christ does. do the following
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10

So they can be sent to Hell, apparently.
Most Christians will say that those who never had the chance to hear God's word can still see Heaven. All those American Indians who didn't know about Christianity, all those mentally challenged people, and all those stillborn babies are all going to Heaven.
So, for those people, they are assured salvation, no questions asked. As soon as a missionary comes along and gives him the option of accepting Christ, the missionary has just doomed him to Hell. Or at least placed him in an awkward spot.
So, "saving" people is actually damning them to Hell. Pretty cute.
Note that this is true only for those sects of Christianity that cannot reconcile a cruel god with a loving god. As such, they will cop out and say that the "innocent" go to Heaven. The harsh fire-and-brimstone Christians are at least honest when they say that the unsaved 6-month-old baby is going to Hell for not knowing Christ.
Perhaps it's a bit of revenge. Since these Christians have taken the "blue pill," they inflict their religion on others so they can suffer the same risk of damnation as Christians.

I hope I don't offend, but not everyone is Christian, so not everyone needs to be saved. The idea of being born into sin and then having to ask to be saved from it is a hard psychological concept to swallow. If people are born into sin then why should anyone be good? If one is saved do they remain saved for all times? I've met people who have told me that they are going to heaven while they know others are damned. This is sad and the Christian religious that push this philosophy really believe that being saved will guarantee their spot in heaven.
My religion teaches that all people go before our Goddess and like any physical mother she welcomes us home. Maybe if the different radical religions would learn that everyone needs to follow their own path to enlightenment, then maybe we wouldn't be sacrificing our friends and family in a religious war in Iraq.

I believe the point of theistic thought is to use a perfect outside source (Jesus in this instance), to achieve forgiveness, love and compassion (maybe other things but these are key).
This helps transform ones mind toward these positive actions.
In this case, Jesus offers and teaches one forgiveness.
This may seem too analytical for some, but it may also help explain to others (who tend to be skeptical of Christian thinking) how to view these beliefs in the positive light they deserve

If you had a cup of poison in it, even just one drop-it could kill you.
Our lives are full of poison/sin/ wrong and evil doings/actions.
God planned a way to be 4given through His Son.
*a person that doesnt read the word of God, will most likely not understand the message and reason.
Also, unless a person is "bornagain" a believer....would understand this. (spiritual renewel and outward change for only good-supposed to be, though difficult)
then a person cannot see the kingdom of God.
That seeing is.....mental understanding and also literal in heaven.
read the book of John-It describes the mission and live of Jesus on earth.
then read the last book....REVELATION,
IT IS THE FINAL REVEALING OF WHAT IS TO COME!!
WHAT JESUS/GOD/HOLY SPIRIT- IS GOING TO DO FOR ALL ETERNITY AND WHERE ALL OF US ARE HEADED.
GODBLESS YOU AS YOU SEEK THE TRUTH, THROUGH HIS WORD. -LIVE4TRUTH=]

God is a righteous and perfect God. Sin cannot stand in His presence. Death came upon all men by the original sin of Adam. This sin seperated us from God. The Old Testament shows us that there has to be a blood sacrifice for sin and there is no sufficient sacrifice other than Christ, the Son of god. Christ took our sin upon Himself. Christ's sacrifice on the Cross redeems us to God the Father.

Because we are born with original sin. God cannot tolerate sin. In the Old Testament, the children of Israel had to make sacrafices for their sins and these sacrafices had to be without blemish. Jesus came as the ultimate sacrafice to atone for our sins. He saved us, but we have to accept His gift. He won't force it on us.

Romans 3:23
KJV: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
we are all sinners. we therefore all desrve to go to Hell. the only way to avoid this is for someone to pay the dept we owed.
Romans 6:23
KJV: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
only Jesus could pay this dept, as only He was both sinless and human(although he was also God). this he did by dieing for us, paying the penalty for our sins on Calvary's cross.
