Does this mechanism have a name? If so what is it?
I've seen it around a couple times. What is it supposed to do (I mean, not just in the movie, therolectically too)?

This device does not exist except in science fiction. The premise in the movie was that this device allowed the rider to travel through space-time in wormholes. In the movie, this apparently happened so fast in Earth-time that to all the people observing on Earth, the rider (Jodie Foster) appeared to just fall through it without going anywhere. Perhaps someday, such a device will be possible, but not now.

This same design is used in a carnival ride and it doesn't use any power. The thing consists of nested giant rings and the rider takes a spread eagle position in the inner ring. The operator gives a push to start it and the rider uses his body weight to try to do forward and reverse flip rotations while spinning around in the plane of his body. It's simple but complicated at the same time.

I don't believe the device was ever named in the movie. In real life, we don't have a theory for what the device did in the move.

My memory is deficient, and the device was purely fictional, but I believe the premise of the story is following instructions from aliens to build a device to help them defeat you. It adds insult to the injury of the Trojan Horse because you have to build it yourself.
