Why is it we keep hearing that illegal immigration is a complex problem? Why do the politicians worry about offending people who are committing a crime? Suddenly speaking against those who commit a criminal act is regarded as "hate speech." We seem to be bouncing off each other as we rush to offer drivers licenses, medical care, employment opportunities and even education as well as college breaks to those "unfortunate aliens" who got here "the hard way."
I'm sorry the "hard way" was the unlawful way, and the truth is these people are here unlawfully and when caught should be punished and/or deported and those who assist these illegals (including state legislators and judges) should be prosecuted for aiding and abetting a criminal act. That's not discrimination any more than locking up a bank robber is discriminatory.

We continue to open our borders and hearts to those desiring a piece of the American dream. We only require they met the necessary criteria and go about it the lawful way. This is not a matter of being compassionate or heartless. It's a matter of simple 'right and wrong.'

We have reached the crossroads in our approach and response to the illegal alien problem. We can either protect our borders and step up prosecution and deportation processes or we can open our borders even more widely than they are presently and let 'em all in. What we cannot continue to do is try to play both sides of the game at once.

How can we justify forcing a state to educate illegals? How can we justify forcing a state to provide medical care for illegals? How can we justify offering these illegals drivers licenses, college enrollment and the rest?

The only thing we should be offering those illegal immigrants is a trip to the stockade until the deportation process can be (quickly) completed and back they go.

A crime is a crime, and being illegally in this country is a crime. It makes no difference the crime or what makes you or your act illegal. Once it is established that a crime has been committed and that the status is one of being 'illegal,' the axe should fall.

If you believe the Dept. of Immigration, we cannot stem the tide, we don't have enough resources. So do we just admit defeat - state that the invasion is complete and 'they win'? Or do we put our resources to work and make a conscientious effort to stop the illegals before they get here, demand the cooperation of the Mexican government and stop the overrun of our borders?

Again the axe should fall. Or let's just get rid of the axe once and for all, repeal all the laws that make such status as "illegal alien" unlawful and just let 'em come on over.

It's just pitiful that the primary Constitutional function of any government, which is to protect our shores and borders is being handled so miserably while the government spends excessive time and resources on a myriad of other enterprises not delegated to it by the Constitution. To say our priorities are mixed up, is a vast understatement.

The solution to the whole illegal immigration 'problem' is simple: admit defeat and surrender (thus forfeiting any legitimate reason for the federal government's existence) , or win the necessary victory.

There is no middle ground.

I don't think jumping the boarder is the hard way, it seems more like a short cut. I believe we should deport the illegals, and welcome any one that is trying to do it the proper way .

I am in agreement with many that we must control our borders. It is a national security issue and the drug lords freely pass drugs into the United States. Okay but we have problems on both sides of the "fence". The "fence" will not stop the corruption of US Officials who allow these drugs to be passed. These same officials will have a key to open that "border fence" to admit the drug lords but will not permit the passage of the poor illegal immigrant that came to clean up your buildings instead of blowing them up. Why do so many drugs come into the United States? The answer supply and demand. We need these illegal immigrants to work the jobs that our so drug addicted nation will not fill. WE NEED COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM. We do not need to repair the damaged levy by placing our finger in the hole. We need to repair the entire levy. DON'T let these politicians keep you ignorant....This whole smoke screen/border fence is just a ploy to get them reelected. These same politicians know that we need this "illegal" work force just as much as they need us.....Think.....if it were not true would it have taken them so long to do something about it. NO it wouldn't have. The 911 incident caused us all to think....but did the illegal alien mastermind that event. No, he didn't so why treat him or her as if they did do it. STOP RACISM. HUG AN ILLEGAL ALIEN TODAY
Who cares build the fence. The American public has clamored that they wish for this atrocity to be built. Then once all those billions of dollars are sunk into the building of this shameful wall......there will be no money for mass deportations...You see this is why the government is building this wall... We all know that it will not serve the purpose for which it is built....They didn't even build a levy that could protect New Orleans..... the illegals crossing are just as unpredictable.....Build the fence so they will be able to say later well we don't have the money now for deportations.......Also you will see discounts on ladders on the other side of the border. You just need a ladder to safely scale the wall without a scratch.

Mcdoodle or whatever you are. The white guys you are talking about are citizens....they may be breaking our laws and need to be punished for that, but, the illegals are illegal. No ifs, ands, or buts. That is what we are talking about. Not the citizens of the USA. We don't need more problems here and most of the ones that do not come over legally are doing so for a reason. They can't because they have a background that precludes it. Otherwise they would be coming over as "LEGALS". I do not understand what is so hard about a person getting the difference. And for the original question. Yes, we need to treat them as the criminals that they are. And also the worksites that hire them. Not just round them up and send them home. A shipyard in Galveston had a round up the week before Memorial Day weekend. They got rounded up and sent home. The next Wednesday, most of them were back at work. Sad that we paid for their holiday trip and the rest of the benefits they reap.

I agree with you but I also disagree with you. First on "the hard way" I believe the ones who had the "hard way " were the legal ones. They had to go to the Embassy, make out the paperwork , wait for the Visa then come here. The Illegals just crossed the border (mostly at night) & melted into society.I as a small business person spend thousands of dollars every year to be sure I hire only legals. I am tared with the same brush as those who hire illegals.I agree the unlawful employers are just out for the bucks. At least my money is clean & my people honest.

Since the illegals are getting food stamps, medicaid, medicare and social security benefits. Where is the aide for the real citizens. In the medical practice I worked in so many illegals had government benefits. I worked hard to build up my social security and it probably won't be there when I need it and deserve it. We need to send a message that breaking the law in the US will be harshly punished. There are legal ways to immigrate. I am all for that big fence. I am also for shooting illegals if they don't turn back. I'm sure I will get lots of hate mail for this but it's how I feel. Why should I have to push 1 for English? Why should all buildings have Spanish signs? Speaking English should number one on the list for legal entry.

Here's a novel idea - face the fact that the immigration laws are written to benefit the people in power. The only reason we have a flood of 'illegals' at this time is that is what benefits the upper class. When my great-grand-parents immigrated, the coal companies actually went to europe and brought them over!

Interesting sub-point to that - when my great-grandfather left The Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was illegal for him to leave! He was arrested and escaped three times on his way to the border.

You probably are also unaware that we have invaded Mexico a few times and put down the democratic governments they were trying to install. Are you aware of that? Well, when we do that, it makes it a bit hard to tell those people to go home and make their country better. That'll just make us invade again!

LETTER I SAW

So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry. Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr..Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home. They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people. When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the
German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot in one red, white and blue bowl. And here we are in 2006 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags. And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.

deportation..
sure beats a firing squad..
I sometimes fear it may come to that..

Maybe Mexico could pay us back what we paid for some of the states.. with principle and interest..
then, pay us back for all the medical care given, the extra teachers..etc..

Sorry, deportation of all illegal immigrants

Come to the United States legally..

Nicely put...

They don't seem to consider that one of the main reasons an illegal comes here illegally is that they cannot get permission to come here because of their criminal or past record.

They also don't consider if it was the other way around. We can't go live in whatever country we want to either, and no obey the laws of that country.
