BTW, I'm american. I just noticed that if an american person is challanged about how this country isn't so great, they start swearing and telling you to shut up. Are Americans brainwashed into thinking this is a great country that was developed honestly and fair? If someone brings up something that happened in history, Americans get mad and haughty and tell the person to leave if they don't like it. Why should I leave? ( even though I am seriously thinking about it) Ignoring the wrong that went on and is still going on doesn't make anything go away, and it just makes America look even less desirable, in my eyes. Yes, there are some great things about America. But there are some bad things too. Why can't anyone else see this?

Ive been to foreign countries. I lived in Germany for four years. I was a kid, but I still remember, and America still looks not so great. And I understand national pride. I don't understand the anger and demanding people to shut up. That, I think, is crazy.

This country isn't perfect, but we're far more successful than any other country in the world. That's why there are so many people who will do almost anything to get here. I think you should count your blessings before you generalize all "Americans" as being crazy.. Did you even read your question before posting it?

If you don't like this country, why are you still residing here? Why you should leave: You're an anti-American which makes you the enemy. We don't need hypocritical people like you who claim America is so "terrible". If you don't like it - shut your mouth or get out.

The problem is that some Americans REALLY think that Washington is the centre of the Universe. Especially those that have never even been out of their States. We, non-Americans, look at the US and see many GOOD people, (that cannot be denied) but somehow you get dazzled by the glitter at election time, and another idiot is elected. (Presidents, Senators and Representatives) And then we are witnesses to mudslinging, scandals, catfights, tantrums, etc. Granted, these things happen in other countries too, but the US seems to love washing its dirty laundry in public. And wash it, and wash it. Hopefully Americans will have learnt something after the GWB fiasco.

Its called national pride. And if you ask others about their country, regardless of how screwed up it, they'll say, my country Rocks. Example- Mexico has some pretty messed up stuff. But you ask any Mexcian if he/she loves their country-- they will certainly say yes (for the most part). Why else would so many who immigrated to the US proudly wave their flag. And that's fine

The US has its issues like any other country. But comparatively speaking, it ranks pretty high in terms of great places to live. Why do so many people want to immigrate to the US if it is a bad place to live? Fact is, its a pretty good place to live given the combined effect of the good things and even the not so good.

I think part of the greatness of the US is that in the past we have acknowleged our faults and mis-deeds and "tried" to correct them. Examples- Civil Rights, Voting Rights, Slavery, Working conditions, discrimination. There are STILL quite a few countries that actively practice these things...

But why live in the past? Especially when it is more likely that your family came here after the "bad" instances. (as in Slavery, conquering Natives)

We can't make it go away, but we can make now and the future better.

Maybe the people you spoke to have lived somewhere else and they think you are crazy for downing our country? If you have not lived in another country, you have no basis for comparison. So that is why they tell you that if you don't like whatever then leave.

There's a lot of bad things about Americans but there are some unique things about Americans:
* Can-do attitude is not found anywhere else. We crazy, yes, because we're optimistic.
* We were founded by people who were willing to take huge chances, so we're a risk taking people
* Yes, there really is a world wide admiration for democracy.
*Yes, the rest of the world generally believes that if you come here and work hard, you'll succeed
* Freedom of speech is admired by a lot of countries who don't have what we have.

Yes, we were barbaric with the Indians and slavery. That is also part of our national heritage. Yes, we took a long time to enfranchise blacks and women.

Well .... America is a great country. I'd dare go as far and say it's the greatest country in history.

Most Americans don't have a fit when you criticize their country. Many Americans (a culture of condescending *******) seem to hate the country they live in and long to live in Europe (why don't they just go already). A lot of Americans get apprehensive but respect your opinion. Others are indifferent.

Why focus on the wrongs that America has done in the past? Look at where everyone in the world is today because of Americans. Europe is free, and mostly rich. The non-Americanized areas, the post-communist bloc democracies, are just now emerging into the rich category. Asia is rich or getting there depending on the country you go to. I don't see black people moving back to Africa in droves...

Face it, it has its faults, but America has made the quality of life for the average person insalely high. This quality of life is matched or is approaching these levels across the world. If America had not been around, I don't think anyone in a rich country would have the kind of life they do now.

Chrissy:

Get over it. Nothing will change the past. The Native Americans around here (who 50 years ago were too ashamed to admit it anywhere) have trace amounts of indian blood and get between 54k and 140k per year depending on which tribe they belong to.... to do NOTHING.

You seem to think your ancestors were the only ones that have been wronged in the past? It's not like white people weren't victims. In this country there has been racism against Jews, Italians, Polish, and especially the Irish among others.

In Europe innocent people were killed for having the wrong beliefs or belonging to the wrong clan. In recent history, you have to look no further than Nazi Germany. They killed anyone who talked negatively of the party's agenda, they targeted Jews, Gypsies, gays, disabled people, and the mentally retarded. Are all Germans evil, too? Africans sold their bretheren into slavery, the same people who were bought and sold by Europeans and Americans. Indians didn't all get along. Are you saying that most Americans are bad because their skin color is white and their ancestors were more technologically advanced first?

There was no benevolent society in the history of mankind. People are always looking to better themselves. In the past, that meant conquest and trade. Now it means trade. You are the ignorant one. Again, get over it. This victim mentality will only hold you down. And it would be no one's fault but yours.

There's lots bad with the country. Universal healthcare, poverty. Still, should you say that 50% of the country is fascist? Should you say that 9/11 was deserved because of incorrect foreign policy over 50 years ago? There's a point where someone is no longer pointing out problems and looking for solutions and they are just making declarations that people and the country are evil. In which case, one might ask, "why do you stay then?"

What is so horrible about America?

I'm sorry you don't like the answer, but it is true. If you don't like it here, you are free to leave and find another country that is to your liking. Not everyone in other countries has that freedom.

If you don't like your job, should the company change to suit you, or should you find another job? If you don't like your apartment, should your landlord be legally forced to decorate it to your tastes, or should you have to find another place to live?

Just because you don't like the answer, doesn't mean it's not right.

But I can tell you it is as great as there is in this world. So hang in there, things will be better soon. Sometimes it takes bad and good to equal great..........

I think America is great. You should remember the rights you have here. Go to some countries and disagree with them and you die. Here men and women have died to give you the freedom to disagree and live.
