because the inside of the ship was holow and the weight was didtributed so the boat would nt be lobb sided. since air is lighter than water the big boat will float. for more info ask the same question at

It really isn't about density, per se, it's about displacement. The area of the ship in contact with the water was spread out over a large area of water and displaced the water, so the ship was able to float.

To be simple. The quintrillions gallons of water was denser than the hollow steel used to make the boat.
