I tend to bruise easily, and last June I received a very dark bruise on my left thigh. After a few weeks, it went away - as expected - but there is still a very faint line around what clearly used to be the bruise. It is not painful but after 4 months, I am beginning to get concerned.

Thank you everyone for responding so quickly... I am 23 years old and have bruised often for as long as I can remember... Actually, I do remember as a young girl the doctor telling me I was anemic, although I thought that the problem had taken care of itself. I think I will run it by a doctor and get his opinion... Perhaps all I need are some vitamins in my diet!!! :)

Bruising easily or bruises that last a long time
Bruising easily does not mean that you have a serious health problem, especially if bruising is minimal or only shows up once in a while. Women bruise more easily than men, especially from minor injuries on the thighs, buttocks, and upper arms.
Older adults often bruise easily from minor injuries, especially injuries to the forearms, hands, legs, and feet. As a person ages, the skin becomes less flexible and thinner because there is less fat under the skin. The cushioning effect of the skin decreases as the fat under the skin decreases. These changes, along with skin damage from exposure to the sun, cause blood vessels to break easily. When blood vessels break, bruising occurs.
Occasionally easy bruising is a sign of a health problem and may be caused by:
* A medication, such as aspirin, blood thinners (anticoagulants), or some antibiotics.
* Infection that causes the buildup of toxin in the blood or tissues (sepsis).
* A bleeding or clotting disorder, such as hemophilia, von Willebrand's disease, or thrombocytopenia.
* Other diseases that affect clotting. Examples include:
o Chronic inflammatory diseases, such as lupus.
o Liver disease, such as cirrhosis.
o Some types of cancer, such as Hodgkin's disease, leukemia, or multiple myeloma.
* Inflammation of a blood vessel (vasculitis).
* Malnutrition, such as deficiencies of vitamins B12 , C, or K, or folic acid.
Bruises that do not go away within 4 weeks of an injury may mean that another problem is preventing healing or that the injury was worse than you suspected.
Call your health professional for an evaluation if you are concerned about how easily you bruise, or if bruises don't seem to be healing normally. Your health professional can evaluate the cause of your bruises and recommend treatment....
I also bruise easily, and am quite well...

You don't give your age. I think I would visit with your doctor about this. You could have a clotting problem that may be fixed with the proper medication. The doctor may want to test you to rule out other disease processes that may be going on. Bruises are blood vessels that have ruptured inside your tissues. They should reabsorb into the blood stream within 2 weeks or less. Bruises that last longer than that could signify more serious problems. I'd see a doctor soon.

Hello Estreet2,
Bruising easily could very well be something or nothing.
I was anemic for about a year and really didn't know it. The only real telltale sign was that I bruised easily.
If I were in your shoes, I would go see my dr. - have them run some blood tests to check your levels.
Also, here's more information on why you could be bruising:

Should have asked this question about 4 months ago the way it sounds..
Some time unexplained bruising come from the lack of iron in your system..
buy some iron tabs and take them daily.
do your finger nails look white throught the nail instead of the normal pink that they are supose to look. this is the first sign of being enemic. don't know if i spelled that right or not.. but you most definately need more iron in your diet.
I used to get complete hand prints on my arm where some one held my arm and not hard either.
it was always lack of iron Iron tabs took care of it.
good luck ..

well the best way that I use to get rid of my bruises is to apply cocoa butter or shea butter to the area and the dark spot goes away over time say about 2 weeks or so

Easy bruising is a sign of platelet dysfunction. I think you should consult a doctor immediately.
