She is 8 yrs old and an ex champion, the owner tossed her to the side after her show days, we do not have funds for vet bill and I am hoping someone has a solution that will help ease her pain and our bills. The infection is continous and gives off quite a bad odor. Cleaning the ear on a daily basis with ear cleaning solution and drops does not seem to help anymore. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have a floppy ear dog that was prone to ear infections and after lots of money at the vets and a change in vets!!! My new vet gave me a remedy that has kept the infections away for 5 years now. First floppy eared dogs are prone to infections cause air cannot get in and dry the ear. You may need a round of antibiotics to clear this one up and I hope you can find the funds to do that, I know its hard. But maybe this will work now, if not do the antibiotics and then do this. My vet told me that at least once a week and more often if your dog likes to play in water and after you give her a bath, put a few drops of Listerine mouth wash in her ear. The alcohol in the mouth wash will help dry the water out of her hears and the germ fighters will help kill any bugs that are residing in there. Use the gold Listerine it works the best. Good Luck I hope you dog feels better soon.

As a vet tech I have to agree with some of the comments above. Owning a animal is a priviledge not a right. Having a chronic ear infection like your dog has is not only painful and can lead to other problems, but it is inhumane. How would you like to walk around with constant pain in your ears? You will also find that vets (like our clinic) will not bill anymore for the simple fact of all the dishonest people out there that promise to pay, cry and sob then when all is better you never hear from them again. So good luck finding a vet that bills.
But in all honesty its about the right choice. Cut your internet off for a couple months and you will have the money to pay for your vet bill, borrow the money and make payments to that person. Or simply find a better home that has the finances to give the dog a pain free and happy life. Look for a cocker spaniel rescue, or an elderly person (they make great buddies). If you dont find the money to get your dog treated you are not better then the previous owner that "tossed her to the side after her show days"
An ear infection is one of the cheapest vet visits you could make so be thankful that an ear infection is her only problem. Wait any longer and she will start to get abscess' and your bill will double.
Sorry if this is harsh but working in this field gives me no sympathy for dog owners, just the dogs. You chose them they didn't choose you!! And when you made the decision to take care of them it didn't only mean food and water it meant financially too!

As far as I know there is no way for you to get an antibiotic for your dog with out a script, you need to see a veterinarian, ear infection can also have abscesses, if it burst and enters the blood stream you are in serious trouble. some veterinarian will work out a payment plan with you, I help to run a guinea pig rescue, I have been in the situation of not having money enough to care for all of them, I have been there done that, call around. You will find some one to help. While you are calling check prices, as some times it is less than you think to see a vet. If you find a vet that will work with you stay with them providing they are good, I wish you all the luck.

Robert, I bought a AKC CHAMPION COCKER SPANIEL from prev. owner ($200) that let the ear infection get so bad poor Moncho lost his eye. When we got him, I had a time w/his ear til his death. My vet had me do this:
Buy a tube of -TERAZOL 7---or--- a tube of Femizol 7(this is for vaginal yeast infections) Then get a med. size baby food jar/empty...Put the tube of medicine in baby food jar & fill the rest of jar up w/baby oil. Get a 3cc syringe at drug store.
(10 day treatments)Shake the mixture up real well, clean the ears w/perioxide, then put 2cc into each ear & rub base of ear together-for 10 days straight...Also keep all ear hair inside/outside shaved off. I guess use'n this med. like vet told us to we treated him twice yearly til he passed on. I was showing Cockers at the time I came across Moncho...I was heart sicken that someone would let such a fine dog get into this condition.....So we bought him. He was 6 yrs old.He didn't even know how to breed normally. Had always been AI bred. His pedigree was out of this world. I taught him how to hand-tie b/f he died at 12 yrs old. He produced us a AM/CAN Champion dog that was Genuinely beautiful....It's sad that so many of these so CALLED GRAND SHOW PPL let these fine dogs go to the back of the kennels & be forgotten.
I hope your dog does ok......E-mail me if you need to.

cockers are prone to ear infections and horrible ones at that. You can try hydrogen peroxide and water to clean out her ears, but i highly suggest going to the vet and getting a treatment this time. They can give you an ear cleaner that you can do at home and hopefully prevent any other ear infections if they are cleaned every week. You can also get the cleaner at your local pet supply store.

This may be really silly- but it may help too. In addition to the other things you are doing, try lifting her ears up when you are petting her. This allows air into the ear. Many times, cockers get infections so easily because no fresh air ever makes it under there.

You really need to take her to the vet.Think of the pain she must be in .If you're not willing to give something up(fast food, movies, new clothes,CDs,etc.)for a week in order to take your dog to the vet, then maybe you should think seriously about giving her up to a cocker spaniel rescue group. They would get her the care she needs and find her a new home. It's not fair to the dog to make her suffer like that.Put yourself in her place.if you had an ear infection, you'd go to the doctor, wouldn't you, now.?

I dont mean to offend, but if you can afford a computer and Internet then why cant you afford to take your dog to the vet? Please take your pet to the vet and ask if they can work with you on the bill, maybe paying installments or cleaning the office and kennels. You wont know til ya ask.

Sorry, but it seems like this is past the point where home remedies can help.
Try going to an animal shelter, and ask them if they could reccommend a low cost vet.
It's mean to say, but I'll say it anyway:
If you can't afford the vet, you shouldn't have the pet.
