in the woods and no one is around, does it make a sound?

wouldn't a good answer be to put a video camera in the woods and watch a tree fall and hear if it makes a sound? I think its a good answer

In order for there to be sound, there must be a medium to capture the sound. Therefor, if there is noone or anything arround to capture the sound than by the meaning of sound, there is no sound.

No medium = No sound

Its kind of a meaningless question, really.

The laws of physics do not change just because humans happen to be absent from the scene. The tree falls, vibrations occur. Sound waves spread in all directions like ripples on a pond

How ego-centric to imagine a world in which the only ears that matter are those that belong to humans. All the mice and birds and squirrels and foxes and wolves and elk and Bigfoot--any one of which is just as likely to witness (and hear) the tree falling--simply don't matter.

The tree falls, and the very Earth shakes as it falls. These things change not according to our selfish fantasies.

(btw-- placing a camera to watch and listen to the tree amounts to "being there" and therefore doesn't count as proof that it makes noise when no one is around.)

No. Sound is based on interpretation. And who would put a video camera in a forest? There may be no trees that fall.

Why do people ask this question? who cares if the tree falls. I tjust means more wood. yaeh some animals might have lost a home but who really cares besides those tree hugguing hippies. besides, if you put a camera out, video tape what happens, yeah it'll make a sound. GOSH!!!

There are two ways of looking at it

1. Someone has to hear it in order for it to be a "noise"
2. Even if no one is there it makes a noise

actually if you look up sound in the dictionary, it says that a sound has some thing to do with someone actually hearing it so the answer to the question is actually no.

Meh- the real question is
"If a tree falls on the forest, and it hits a mime, does anyone care?"

no, b/c it only makes a sound if someone is around to convert the sound waves into something we hear.

They should say "...and no one or nothing is around to hear the sound, and nothing is there to record the sound..."
THEN, would it make a sound?
