I think you should purchase a.....
Car buying is all about personal choice. What one person wants, and needs, isn't going to be what someone else would want or need. First, what do you like? What kind of stuff do you do? In my case, I love to camp, ski, and white water raft. So I needed a car that was versatile, and wouldn't get stuck. So I purchased an old Jeep Cherokee with a 6 cylinder engine. It is strong enough to pull a small raft trailer. It handles well in the snow, and I can take it on unimproved roads without worrying about getting stuck.
So first, decide what you want the car for.
Second, look around for a car that meets those needs.
Third drive a few different types of cars that meets your needs, and decide what one you like.
Finally, Once you decide on a make and model, and approximate year, look around for the best deal. You might find a vehicle for less then you have budgeted for.
Good Luck.

5K is not much money, but to get the best value for your limited budget I would reccomemd looking at a Hyundai Elantra.
I own a 2002 Elantra GT and have had ZERO problems. It is not a really fancy car, but it is quite reliable and economical to buy and maintain.

get a cheap, american made (ford or dodge), truck cuz they are dependable and they can haul stuff too. plus you can take your extra money and change the truck into whatever you want, maybe you like a lowrider sports truck, or maybe you like a huge 4X4 off-roader. just choose whatever kind of car you think represents yourself the most. i personally like big Ford trucks.

Depending on your needs, I'd recommend a Miata. Extremely dependable, fun to drive , good on gas, and trunk space is better than you'd think.
