Fokker Wolf was the fastest propeller(fighter plane) but the Messerschmitt 262 was the fastest, first jet plane that came out towards the end of the second world war, The Mosquito was the fastest surveillance plane, it was a spy plane and therefore had no guns just cameras and was made of wood.!!!

The aircraft that held the world record (1939) for piston-prop planes during world war two was the Me 209 (470mph). The record was not broken until 1969 by the F8F 'Rare Bear'.

For operational aircraft I believe it was the Mustang, but there were several prototypes and test aircraft that were faster (like the Do 335 push-pull fighter, some experimental P-47s, etc)

The person that said the Dornier Do335 Pfiel (Arrow) is correct. That was an operational fighter, As for modified operational piston engined fighters, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, specially modified of course, recorded a speed of 505 mph, IN LEVEL FLIGHT, in August 1944. Not in a dive, but straight and level.

There is a documented case of a Spitfire that broke the soundbarrier whilst in a dive, perhaps another person could verify this as I am curious myself.
