It means no one branch of the goverment has absolute power.The Congress cant over ride the senate & the senate has the last vote on every thing . The Senate is the only branch that can defeat something the President wants.The Suprem Court can over ride all branches of goverment.

It's defined as a political doctrine under which the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government are kept distinct. Not one has power over the other.
It hints an underlying structure of the United States Constitution. Each state has their own Government set up grass rooted and dissected into so many intricate ways, no one can possibly know all the laws to follow etc...
I like to think of it as, "The Family Tree of Powers That Be."

The lines of separation of powers have been blurred in recent times, typically at the hands of the executive branch overstepping its bounds. Two examples of this are:
1) The recent and quasi-illegal NSA wiretapping program
2) The Clinton administration's interference in a drug bust in NYC in apx. 1998, which led to a federal judge reversing his ruling that the drug bust was an illegal search.
