If so, why did they not punish Mary? After all, they probably did not believe that Christ was a virgin birth.

If a woman was caught in the act of adultery, she was stoned to death, even in the time of Christ.

They didn't punish Mary because she was betrothed to Joseph. And, you're right, some of the Jews of the day did think this.

A woman could be put to death by stoning for adultry. As for Mary, Jospeph married her, but did not know her until after the birth of Christ. Why not study the bible instead of trying to tear it apart without knowing what it's all about.

Because Joseph married her.If he wanted he had the choice to have her stoned to death or being the good guy he was,was thinking about divorcing her quietly. An angel came to him in a dream and told him it was cool so he married her.He would have had to turn her in if he wanted to punish her.And believe me Jesus suffered rude comments all his life about it (John 8:19 and 8:41 for examples.).

mary was betrothen already. joseph had to have the angel tell him to marry her to prove it was true. she would have been in trouble but he married her first. they were already married by the time jesus was born, or she was even showing i think. also. i think that even if it was a social crime, not everyone was stoned for it. it depends on who got caught. a lot were probably just cast out or looked down on as socially unclean or something. fornication is different than adultary(?) i dont really know.

Yes they usually stoned them to death. But Because of Joseph`s heroic decision to stay with her she was spared. He had already been betrothed to her which is the year before the actual ceremony so they saw it as his problem/choice.
