I've been homeschooled for the past 6 years, and I really enjoy it. You do learn a lot, I think, because you get more "one-on-one" time with your teacher. You can also take your learning at your own pace. It helps, though, to be in a community where there are a lot of opportunities for homeschoolers, or a large homeschooling group. I'm a teen, and in our teen group we go dancing, bowling, to movies together, to the mall--the best part is, we can work around our schedules and go in the mornings!!! In a bigger group, there are also classes for homeschoolers that you can take--I have friends that do a Marine Biology class, there are history classes, dance classes, sooooo many things like that are available. Also, you are able to take a week off to go visit family because a relative just died, or whatever and not worry about catching up on a week of school. You are able to adapt your weeks and schooling times to what goes on in your daily life. It can be very flexible, which is SO nice some days! However, homeschooling is not for everyone--you are around your family a lot! Fortunately, I get along great with my family. It can be tough at times, but I truly love it.

Should I suppose from the wording of your question that you are wanting answers from students?

I'm a home-school mom.

Yes, I sometimes enjoy home-schooling and sometimes I do not enjoy it.
I believe that my children have received a better education than the one I received for myself in public school. The outcome of home education has many variables -- some will be worse than P.S. others will be better.... the over-all stats' show that the ratio is better in home-school.
Yes you can learn a lot or you can learn very little. It will depend on the study ethic of each student. It will also depend on the material offered and also on the study enviroment.
Sometimes it is fun, sometimes it is hard work-- some of the work is fun, some is not. It's not really all that different from anything else that you do. Real life is what it is. You take the bad with the good and do your best to turn it all into GOOD.

I was homeschooled as a kid until 9th grade when I chose to go to public high school to experience what i was missing. Looking back (I graduated several years ago) I think that in spite of its flaws, public school is the better option in most cases.

Of course there are situations when public school doesn't do its job for a particular child. Then I believe homeschooling can be a great alternative; but only in special circumstances such as these.

I believe myself to be fairly intelligent (having been told & earning excellent grades in high school and college) though I'm not sure if that is natural or a result of my having been homeschooled--probably a combination. Homeschooling may indeed provide a better education. It largely depends on the parents and the child. For my brother and I, our home education was very unstructured because we were very motivated and self directed learners. We were (& still are!) very curious about the world around us, and always asking questions. Some parents do school-at-home with structured lessons and a strict schedule. Others fall somewhere in between. My parents wanted us to love learning, not grow to hate it because of being forced to do busywork in school, so I had very few requirements to complete.

Although I dont feel I was ever at a real academic disadvantage, the tradeoff was in the social aspect. As a small child I remember crying because I was so lonely. My parents enrolled me in rec league soccer, 4-H, girl scouts, and even founded their own homeschool support group (with meetings for parents and field trips for the kids), but in spite of this I still craved more interaction with peers. I have often been the outsider in social situations and I attribute this to the fact that I missed out on vital early socialization.

I'm sure geography is a huge part of this. We lived in the country, far away from neighbors, so play dates always had to be pre-arranged and were always a big ordeal. I know for a fact (from friends) that its easier on kids in towns who can walk or ride bikes to each others' houses without much notice or fuss.

In high school I had to learn a lot in a very short time, and had trouble adapting. I'm very glad I decided to attend, because had I not I would have had extreme difficulty with college (if I went) and jobs. I still feel that I'm at a social disadvantage, but I get by pretty well, and I think high school was vital in this.

Although the quality of education may be better for homeschoolers, the learning can ALWAYS be supplemented at home, even for public school kids. (In fact I think parental involvement is key... learning doesnt stop when the bell rings, whether we are trying to teach something or not!) Public school prepares kids to interact with their peers, and learn how to fit in. Parents should help them develop their individuality, by all means, but homeschooling almost guarantees that the kid will be marked "different" for life. And people aren't always kind to the odd duck. My son will go to public school--but I will be as involved in his development and education as I can when he gets home.

Sorry to have rambled on, but I thought my insight might be helpful. Thanks for reading this!
