Not only can you hang drapery on windows with plantation shutters (painted or stained) but this was frequently done in historic interiors. Drapery can lend a nice softening effect to the hard edge of the shutters. Also, you are not obliged to hang your panels at the exact top of the window; for added visual height they may be hung nearer the ceiling. This will give the effect of a longer window (even with a bit of wall showing above) and more perceived height to the room.

if your heart is set on having the curtains, you might want to check out some other options - instead of the plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are pretty ostentatious on their own, so it might look like too much with curtains on the windows too. If you like the look of curtains, I would suggest considering wood blinds or honeycomb shades instead.

My bedroom growing up had plantation shutters, I had a balloon valances. It looked nice with the shutters inside the room.

if you use the BIG plantation shutters, you really can't use another treatment as blinds are 2" or more wide. If you want extra window treatment, use the small shutters...works much better...good luck

Shutters can look very nice, but its the color that is important to get the correct look. IKEA do them at good prices!

Sure - just make sure the shutters are mounted flush with the window opening.
