take him to the vet. it is probably a small cut that got infected, or whatever he stepped on might still be embedded in the pad, like a splinter

OK, maybe you have a ton of money but I don't and I wouldn't take my cat to an emergency vet for most anything unless I thought he was in immenent danger of dying (and I love our 4 cats very much). Unless your cat is listless, not eating or drinking, he isn't going to die overnight.
One of our cats got an absess in his paw not once but twice by breaking a glass container and stepping on it. Not our brightest feline! We treated it at home.
The problem with cat skin is that it heals over a puncture very quickly and the hole inside can get infected. Using peroxide will open up the wound to allow it to drain. This might be something you want the vet to do because it is gross and not a lot of fun for you or the cat. If you choose to do it, wrap the kitty burrito-style in a towel to keep from getting scratched.
The biggest thing is to keep the wound open to let it drain. I'd advise against bandaging it so he can lick it which will keep it clean too. There is also a great medicine called Panalog that is for animals that you buy from a vet and it can be sqeezed into the wound. If it is a bad enough infection, the cat might need a shot of antibiotics.
Good luck!

Take him to the vet- cut paws a VERY painful and they do not heal well on their own.
Imagine stepping on glass, and laying open your heel to the depth of about a half inch...
That's what a cut pad is like. You'd need antibiotics, stitches and a bandage... so does kitty
No aspirin, No Tylenol, no over the counter pain meds please, you can kill your cat. If you can wrap it in a warm wet washcloth for 10 minutes at a time- that will help keep it clean, but get to the vet asap. A trip to the emergency vet would be a really good idea.

My own cat jumped on our electric stove while it was on one time and burnt his paw. You have to take your cat to the vet. Look around for an emergency vet places, or call your vet and see if he has an emergency number for after hours. If neither of these work, put some neosporin on the cut, and wrap it just like you would wrap a hand. Make sure you don't make it too tight or too loose. He's going to hate it and try to tear it off but try at all costs to prevent him from doing this. Tomarrow def. take him to the vet. If you cat is like mine and won't stand for just bandaging the vet will either give him a collar, or if that doesn't work he'll give him a hard cast.

If the cat is meowing or crying to you he is asking for help.
Sometimes the dew claw gets infected (especially if he is an inside cat) and he will need antibiotics.
Or he may have something stuck inside.
It seems a good vet is the only choice.
Call up the Humane Society or Friends of Animals and they can recommend a vet that isn't going to rip you off.

First if it is any depth or very long he will need stitches take him to the VET!. If it is not all that serious, you could clean it with diluted peroxide 5 to 1. Betadine after the peroxide a couple times a day for a few days, wrap it or he will lick it. Do not use sticky tape! They will not like this bandage! If the cut is an inch or bigger, oozing not closing better go quick it may need stitches and be infected! That is poisoning his blood. Here is a link to help you.

Take him to a vet NOW. If your regular vet is not available, find a 24-hour emergency vet clinic. You're cat is in pain! His paw is probably infected and if you don't get it taken care of IMMEDIATELY it could lead to major problems.

you can clean it out and bandage it like suggested and hope in time it will heal. But what if there is still something embedded in side? It will hurt him like crazy,(his crying when you touch it tells you that it hurts) it will fester with infection and will cost twice as much at the vet when you finally get him there. Best to be safe for his comfort. Take him to the vet now!!!
