the smell doesn't travel very far inside, so it is pretty clear where it is coming from--if you are smoking inside a room, right outside it will probably smell pretty strong for a while. Outside, the smell usually disapates pretty easily, but those walking by will not be fooled.
The smell does not last very long. It is actually fairly easy to cover up, depending on what you have been smoking. If you roast a joint the smell is going to linger for quite some time especially if you have the roach out in the open. Just open some windows and get the air moving, wrap up/throw away roach/ash, and spray with neutra air or lysol, the smell should go away soon. If you doubt it just leave the room for a few minutes and come back, you will be able to smell it again and assess how much more spray/air circulation you need.

Hi. I have heard of police burning seized drugs and the smoke went quite a distance but mostly up. Don't know how long the smell lasts.

If you get some really stinky stuff, you can hotbox a car so that it reeks for hours. You would be surprised how far away you can smell it. As a rule, avoid crowded and public places to smoke. Show respect for others, and for yourself in not exposing yourself to arrest, etc. Enjoy, but keep it low key.
