I used to get these all the time, little blister sores on the lips and around the mouth, then the annoying healing process when they dry out, crack and bleed and look terrible.
There are 2 Herpes viruses, 'Herpes Simplex' is the one that affects your face, nothing to do with sexual disease. Research has shown that most people get exposed to the virus by the time they are 5 years old, and carry it in their system from then on. some people never suffer from cold sores because they never got exposed to the virus at a young age.
It is definitely stress related, when your body is coping with stress the dormant Herpes Simplex can get active.
I got out of the cycle by using alternative medicine - buy some good quality aromatherapy Eucalyptus oil, not the kind you burn to make a room smell nice, the kind that you can put on your skin. Put 3 drops into a small amount of olive oil / good quality oil such as a sweet almond oil. Put some of this on your lips and around your mouth as often as you want. Eucalyptus oil has a healing effect and the herpes virus becomes dormant. NEVER use undiluted Eucalyptus oil on your skin, its too strong. Put it on the moment you feel the tingling that tells you there will be a cold sore soon, I haven't had a cold sore for 2 years now

If one already carries the virus. Yes stress could trigger an out
break. You would have to be really run down and it would have
to be a tremendous amount of constant stress.

That seems to be one of the things that make them erupts. Stress suppresses your immunity and gives the virus a chance to do it's thing.
