@ngela: It's obvious you are one that has never done any research on the subject. "a book about nothing" is that really what you think atheism is?

good one!
since Xianity (or the typical uneducated guppy convert) is largely all about the sacred Double Standard of do as I say, not as I do
I think you will get back rhetoric and scripture quotings
I am still reading athiest books, just fall over myself with Sam Clemmens books thinking over 100 years ago this guy was challenging the norms back in a much more conservative era.
most Xians have not read the whole bible and are unaware of the NC-17 content that caused it to be banned from some public school libraries when they went after athiest books and authors as a nifty backfire

The bulk of atheists I have encountered have a passing familiarity with the Bible. Often they have read 1 or 2 verses people have sent them and really deep down have a problem with either religion itself or God himself. It is never good to set yourself up against an institution like Christianity without having specific well thought out researched arguments against it.
In the case of atheism it is good to understand what they think and how they feel on certain issues. But there isnt all that much to atheism, it is an absence of belief in religion, not a religious institution. The only foundation for atheism is disbelief itself because there is no positive evidence to support the conclusion there is no god. Many philosophers have tried and failed over the centuries to get rid of this pesky problem of god but he just wont go away, no matter how much they want him to; quite the contrary!

gino_ggg,
"Question 1: What would you think about atheists who criticize your religion but have never actually read the bible, attended church or read any books on the subject of theology?"
You ask as if it never happens. They reveal themselves as being what they are. And it's easy to spot.
"Question 2: Would you hold christians to the same standard who criticize atheism, but have never actually read any books on the subject, studied the history or analyzed the specific arguments which are the foundation for atheism?"
No. But I might correct them if I thought that they got something wrong. Experience counts lots for telling it right.
It's just that you seem to be bent upon believing that you can reason a way for Chrsitians to see that they need to get out of Christianity. I suppose that you think that you are trying to help, when in actuality you are being percieved as one infected by the contrary spirit of the devils message. I know you think that is nothing, but I for one do not see it that way. Everything that John and Jesus, and Paul warned me about are shown in your words. You have an antichrist spirit and know the ways of him. You speak his words. And I was forewarned of you attempts.
If you must believe in the things that you bring to our attention, then I guess you must. I just thought that you should know that many of us who are paying attention to the "fairy tales" were told about you before you even were seen.

Thank you. I have often heard your question 1 but none have ever stated them both together. I congratulate you on your fairness.
I can really answer them both for you. I have been a Christian and am no longer because of the organization of the religion.
I am now Wicca which most Christians consider Atheistic but is not really but because they do not care to inquire, believe that to be so. It is unfair in either direction to comment as fact or berate any religion that you are not fully aware of, this would include any religion. You may not like certain sects of a religion as is organized by men but that does not mean that the basis of the religion and undesirable. Religion too must be separated from practice. They are different in their fundamentals.

Hi Gino,
Good questions.
I'm not out to convert the Atheists. Some of them are pretty fun. I like to ignore the mean folks and play with the fun folks. That's what Jesus teaches. Love they neighbor. Even if he thinks you're a weak minded dolt.
I dislike any kind of nastiness. There is no reason for it. People criticize when they are of a weak mind on any given subject. Strong will folks, folks of conviction, don't need the approval of others and as such don't care what anyone thinks.
I LOVE the questions! I really do. Some of our atheist friends here ask some really good ones. Give my brain some exercize!
Good day to you!

Gino,
You raise a valuable point. And while I try to educate myself (as I sit here, I have to my left ST. Josh's reader on Atheism), I may not have considered the books, history, and specific arguments that you consider the foundation of atheism.
I invite you to educate me about the books, history, and arguments you consider the foundation of atheism. I have studied the Bible, attended church, and talked with people whose opinion I consider valuable. I consider that those acts have helped me in understanding my religous faith.
But beyond my studies, I look to the actions of those people close to me who I consider to be strong Christians. When my husband grew depressed and lost his job, my Christian family stepped up and helped me. When we lost our house, they were there for me. This loving support really kept me going during hard times.
And I hope God blesses you with the same kind of loving support from those close to you. Whether they are Christian or atheist, I hope that you will find friends and loving help if hard times ever touch your life. And I pray that this love willl open your mind and spirit to accepting God's love.
God bless you,
Laura

The last time I asked a question here about the personal histories of atheist YA users, many of the atheists themselves denied that atheism has a history.

I've read a lot of atheist literature as a philosophy student. I wanted to know the other views as well or better than they did. I don't expect others to be as obsessive about those subjects as I was. Not at all.

Answer to both: you should know the facts of your belief and how to defend them enough you would die for them. Christians should study "atheism" to know in full detail what they believe and how it compares. Atheists should do the same. If you don't you shouldn't be criticizing the other.
