Your opinion is suggested by the way you've phrased your question, of course, so it's a matter of agreeing or disagreeing with you.

I think most servers do wash their hands carefully.

At the same time, there are some who clearly do not. For that matter, there are probably one or two who actually pee on their hands intentionally or worse.

I generally trust servers, treat them well, and hope for the best, but going out to eat is definitely taking a chance, even if a small one.

Not only do I worry about them washing their hands I worry about restaurant hygiene overall. I used to work in a restaurant and it scares me thinking back about the things that used to happen. I'm sure not all restaurants are bad and some are probably better than others. e.g. they used to use the same cloth to wipe tables, wipe hands, dry the inside of woks, and also wipe sauces off the side of plates etc before the dish is taken out. Oh, and think twice before you ever order chilli beef from a Chinese restaurant again.....

It is a worry to us all even if the waiter is obnoxious or not ! Hopefully decent restaurants will always try to ensure their staff maintain a high standard of Hygiene and we therefore can only trust that is so .

A few years ago, my girlfriend and I went to an Indian restaurant with her best mate and her bloke and he saw the waiter drop a nan bread on the floor, pick it up brush it down and serve it. We never used that restaurant again and told everyone about the incident.

It doesn't matter if they are obnoxious or not. It worries me if they have or not. A lot of restaurants get violations for employees that don't wash their hands after many things.

Here's a TIP.

Always give the Waiter half the tip FIRST!

And say "The other half if you look after us".

Works wonders......

It does worry me - 'cos I bet they don't.

And I'm pretty sure that they spit in your food if you're not very nice to them. So ALWAYS be charming to a waiter at least until you've finished eating.

Yes they do.
They wash away the dna traces of the last feaces in the bowl, which they've crumbled on your food, so as to avoid prosecution, when you get diseases.
