The first rule of thumb is to have it figured out before you approach the bar. We bartenders hate indecisive customers. If you want something strong that does taste that way you can go with the always popular "Long Island Iced Tea". If you want something to sip on that will merely "buzz" you, I recommend "Rum Runner" or something of that nature. Avoid ordering frozen drinks and amaretto sours. People might question your sexuality.

I was a bartender at a karaoke bar a few years back and I came up with a drink in which quite a few of my customers got hooked on - they even named it the "Aimless" (after yours truly)....
In the tallest glass you have - preferably a 16oz chilled beer glass - fill with ice.
Keeping a 2:1 ratio add Bushmills Irish Whiskey and Razzmatazz or Chambord liqueur (that is 1 or 2 shots of Bushmills + 1/2 or 1 shot of Razzmatazz).
Fill the rest of the glass with Ginger-ale.
Yummy!
Not too sweet but sweet enough and it's refreshing!
After a few of these I found some of the karaoke crooners would break from their usual Country and Western musical repertoire and even try their vocal skills with a Metallica tune or two! :)

Caribbean Shipwreck is currently my favorite. You put a shot of Red Bull and a shot of pineapple juice in a glass and serve with a shot of Captian Morgan's spiced rum. Dump in the shot and enjoy!

Vodka Cranberry is a nice crisp, not too sweet drink. If you want to dilute the alcohol a bit you can add Sprite or 7-Up. Makes me thirsty thinking about it!
