California has GREAT "family bonding" leave! :)
To qualify, you must be employed and paying SDI. You can be hired today, and qualify to start leave tomorrow.
As the mother, you are allowed to begin your pregnancy-related disability leave beginning three weeks before your due-date (assuming no complicatoins -- you can start earlier if medically indicated), and for six weeks afterwards.
After those six weeks post partum, you no longer qualify for disability. However, you do qualify for Paid Family Leave (a new thing, as of 2004). This is an additional six weeks paid leave. The difference here is that you don't have to take it all at once -- you can take it (all at once or in chunks) any time within one year of the birth or adoption of a child. (There are other events that qualify for PFL, but this is the relevant bit here.) DADS ALSO QUALIFY FOR PFL!
As the mother, you will be sent PFL special Paid Family Leave forms with your last disability check, so it's cake. Your baby's father can obtain them from his employer's HR department.
Your doctor's office will have the forms you need to apply for disability.

There are 4 regulations that could apply.
1. CA Pregnancy Disability Leave Act
2. CA Family Rights Act
3. CA Paid Family Leave
4. Family Medical Leave Act (Federal)
Numbers 2 and 4 only apply if your employer has over 50 employees. You can find out more by "googling" California Deparmtent of Fair Employment and Housing and then looking up these regulations.
In general though, the maximum leave period (with job protection) is UP TO 4 months for PDL and another 12 weeks under FMLA/CFRA.

You can go on your states website, just google it. If your doctor takes you off work before you are due, you have to fill out a form and attach the note with it. You usually get 6 weeks after the baby is born (PAID). If you have a C-Section it is usually 9-10 weeks (PAID). You dont have to be eligible, every pregnancy and birth is your eligibility. Check it out online. You can learn alot from those website. Just google like: Maternity/Paternity leave

I don't know about paternity, but you get disability checks for 6 weeks after the baby comes if it was a vag delivery, I think 8 if it was a c-section. Not sure about the c-section, though. I had my kids natural.
