What's really annoying...when a friend of mine from Europe was pulled over, they asked him to say the alphabet backwards. English is his 6th language and he was actually able to do it...and the cops STILL made him take the breathlyzer!

I can do it, practiced on a long bus ride once. Sometimes they will tell you to say the alphabet backwards, sometimes they will ask you to do something else. It's not designed to see if you get the right answer, It's just a technique to get you to break your concentration from trying to act sober. Alcoholics can be very, very good at acting sober for short periods of time, but it doesnt' really matter what they ask you they're just trying to break your concentration.

Well, why would anyone want to be able to say the alphabet
backwards? There is not one thing I can think of that it would
be useful for and I think your idea of saying the alphabet
backwards for drunkeness is not true. What would that prove?
99.9% of the population could not do that, so how could that
prove someone drunk or not drunk? I did see one little kid one
time that could do it, but I think his folks just wanted him to
do something so he could show off for their friends.

They aren't actually expecting you to say the alphabet backwards-they are waiting for you to say something stupid like "Man, I can't even do that when I am sober"

If you practice you can say the alphabet backwards, but it is my understanding that it is not used in field sobriety tests. At least that is what my Father told me, and he was a Sheriff

just for your information no clean cop will use that test we have a standerized field sobriety test (sfst) which is used across the nation it consists of three tests the walk and turn, one leg stand, and HGN test, if you fail any of these you are arrested and given a chance to blow in a breathylyzer machine which gives the .08 bac level, if you know a cop arresting people for the abc rumor you should report it to his sup and that should end it its not an accepted test and anyone arrested for failing this test should have no problem having the dwi dismissed in court. hope i helped
