I would like to be able to show my personality in my home and just hanging pictures doesn't seem to satisfy my need for personal expression. Since I can't paint/wallpaper I am stumped. I do not want tacky, I want style. Suggestions?

You can put fabric up on the walls like wallpaper using liquid starch. Cut the fabric to the proper length ( ceiling to floor ) then soak in liquid starch and squeeze out excess leaving fabric damp. Apply to the wall as you would wallpaper. This does no damage to the walls and will stay up until you pull it down. Prints work best because they hide uneven spots on the walls and seams but you can probably use solids if you get a heavier fabric.

I am a landlord, try telling your landlord that you will paint it back with the color that is there now. There is no reason why he shouldn't let you paint your walls. The only thing that I would tell you is not to paint the walls wacky colors and all different colors. Make it look nice and the landlord should let you paint. By the way if you paint the walls a similar color the landlord is supposed to pay for the paint and you could deduct from rent. But I wouldn't.

Good Luck

As an experienced renter I know the frustration of not being able to make a place your own- the first thing I did when I got a house was paint every wall! As far as apt living, I always found that using 3-d art made a nice statement. I searched resale shops etc for large pieces like iron gates, privacy screens etc that you normally wouldn't use as wall art-- or used a piece of artistically patterned material as a over sized wall hanging.

Heidi had a good suggestion with hanging fabric. Also, when I was in college, a friend and I rented an apartment where we weren't allowed to do anything, either. We bought some wallpaper that we liked, and instead of pasting it up, we put it up with some two-sided sticky tape. (Sometimes though...the tape can pull off the paint when you go to take it down, so be ready to fix any problems like that if they occur.)
If you're careful, it can look pretty good.

How about a large screen? Using 1"x1" wood, create a frame much like a picture frame. Except, make this one 6' tall by whatever width you choose. Stretch fabric, perhaps duck, across the face and staple it to the back. Now you will have something like a blank canvass to work with. You can paint this or decoupage it however you like! You can cover it in fabrics that suit your style, or paint it all one shade and attach special pictures.

Cigarette burns (or any burns, for that matter) are not considered normal wear and tear on carpeting. You are entitled to charge the tenants (upon vacating the premises) for replacement. However, don't expect to be able to replace ALL the carpeting involved in the unit. If the burns are limited to one room only, that is the room you are entitled to replace and be reimbursed for. If the cost of the replacement exceeds the security deposit, you are entitled to ask for (and go to court over) the full cost of the carpeting replacement for the room involved.

Listen to Jidwg she's got the answer or you can hand the fabric with staples from a staple gun or thumb tacks. The starch works the best

I saw on a remodle show for apartments that you can dip fabric in liquid starch and apply to wall (wet) it will stick, and to remove you just pull it off. They claim no damage to wall, and fabric is reusable. Sheets work well if you remove the seams at the top and bottom.
