Most foreigners can get jobs as English teachers. The salaries are not great (~30.000 baht = $750/mo), but it's possible to live on much less for a single person with no medical problems. An average salary for a Thai in Bangkok is about 10000 baht, but for a foreigner, I think a realistic minimum for having a semi-decent life is 20.000.

Very rougly, costs of living are roughly 25% of what they are in U.S. Midwest (food and apartments are very cheap).

If you're a really good cook (with references), you may land a cooking job -- there are many good international restaurants in Bangkok. I know an Italian guy who makes a good living as a cook there.

Please be aware of the visa situation, which got a bit tougher recently. Earlier on, people could stay indefinitely on 30-day border runs, but now need to get a real visa (you can get a work permit, or look into a retirement visa since you're over 50).

One of the best jobs sites is www.jobsdb.com. It is hard to get a job that pays well, and also gives you the necessary work permit to make everything legal. Teaching is one option but that is poorly paid. I am sure you already know that wages here are much, much less than in other parts of the world. The average Thai is earning around 8,000 - 10,000 baht per month - which equates to about US$ 250. The cost of living is lower, but it's really not a simple process to get a job here. Sorry, but I hope this information helps.

Probably your best bet to start off is teaching over there, that way you can try it out and see if you really want to live there. Plus they help you find a place to stay. Contact a school in your city that provides over seas missions for teaching.
