This is a great question. I'm not sure if you refer to taking the energy drink before you run or while you run.

If it's before you run and you simply want to wake up, plain old coffee will do the trick.

If it's while you run, that depends on the distance. Many experts say you don't need anything if you aren't going more than a 2 or 3 miles. I use Propel (made by Gatorade) for mileage between 3 and 6 miles. I use accelerade (sold at most running stores) for mileage beyond 6 miles. Accelerade is loaded with more nutrients for the more demanding runs. (see link to their website below)

Another option to suggest is to use Energy Gels. These are highly portable and provide a quick burst of energy. For my marathon and training leading up to the marathon, these were valuable to have. Accelerade also makes the energy gels.

I was never able to tolerate Gatorade while running since it had too much refined sugar and caused me to cramp up, Each person is different though.

Good Luck!

I would disagree with water. If you are running for an hour, water will help, but you certainly will have better performance with a smidge of carbohydrates. Propel, has too few.

I usually like plain old Gatorade... The calories aren't that bad and it gives you enough glucose to keep up your energy levels high.

In addition, in the morning, your glucose levels are generally low (unless you eat before you run). Gatorade (and similar drinks) deliver energy pretty quickly, thus enabling better workouts.

Some of the caffeinated drinks like Red Bull and Monster can be good, but their effects are diminished over time (as you become accustomed to the caffeine kick). Caffeine is also mildly addictive.

If you are going to be going longer than an hour you may want to look at some of the super-high carbohydrate drinks. I used to use Twin Labs Ultra Fuel for my 2 hour runs (400 calories per serving). Head on over to GNC and see if they have any similar products.

Good luck.

I grew up drinking Lucozade Sport, and used to use it as a mental aid as well (I felt i couldn't run without it). Now I'm a personal trainer and nutritional advisor. So I know you need the carbs and the blood electrolytes, but I also know that nearly all sports drinks are the same. If Lucozade Sport is on offer at the supermarket I drink that. If not I get stuff like Tesco/Boots/Asda own brand sports drink. The word you are looking for is isotonic in the name as this means it will almost immediately replace body fluid. You can always get some form of sports drink for about 50-60p per 500ml bottle

You don’t need to exercise for long periods of time. Short, sharp sets of exercise will produce better results when you work hard. Get a missing rope, skip for two minutes, do push ups for a minute or so, skip for two minutes, rest for starters minute. Then change the push approximately something else like sit ups and also do the set again. Repeat it five times and it’s a rapid, effective workout that will improve results than a long run or swim.

The best sport drink to take with you while you are running would be gatorade, powerade. Or have you tried vitamin water that's good while to, and it's better than drinking water.

Gatoraid at least 15 minutes before and water straight afterwards. Remember to eat after exercise.
