Personally, because he is f'ucking retarded, in a good way though. I mean, really, he is to be known to be fat and jolly, with cookie crumbs all over his body because that what people leave out for him. I am surprised that he is not a diabetic and been in a lot of sugar comas because of that! So, why would he come down the chimney? Really, he could come through the window.
Take an instrument that some cat burglars might use to safely open the window with a nice, clean, circular motion and then, open the window farthest away from the tree and then come on in and give gifts! Why squeeze your fat a'ss down a chimney? Why? What the f'uck? F'ucking idiot! Loving, generous, but, an idiot.

When the original poem was written most of the homes in that area had fireplaces. It was a familiar sight and an easy way to explain how St. Nick got into the house without opening doors or windows in the winter.

because in the story of St. Nicholas that was the only way he could get into the house because the doors were locked because at that time St. Nicholas was a real person in the story.

my mum had to leave a key for santa cause we had a gas fire! (I used to ask so many questions! She covered them all very well!)
