I'm sure this question will get a lot of sarcastic remarks.
Either way Hell is a very real place.
If you die and end up there as you descend the darkness will overcome you like a blanket and the lonliness will be as a coat, then you will hear screams of people, fear will start to grip you, as you get closer you will recognize some people but others will be strangers. Demons will beat you and your flesh will burn off only to regrow and then burn off again, undying worms will eat their way out of you through every orface you have.
There is no way out, no hope, no love, no joy, eternal separation from any loved ones you had that ended up in Heaven, and most of all separation from a GOD who did nothing but love you your entire life and wanted the same in return.
Please do everything you can to stay away from the place called Hell.

Fake scare tactic. And not a "metaphor for lack of spiritual enlightenment," rather an imagined place of punishment for those that are bad.

Yes, it is a real place. We are real and were made to live forever. Either with God (Through accepting forgiveness from Jesus) or in hell (For ignoring the salvation offered in Jesus). Hell was never made for people. It was only for the devil and fallen angels but those that do not want Gods help will end up there.

Interesting question. My personal take on it is that heaven and hell are metaphors for the dichotomy of life itself. That internal voice that is always at odds with what we WANT to do as opposed to what we know we SHOULD do. Spiritual enlightenment comes as a result of first acknowledging the fact that there is a dichotomy. From there, we try to listen to our higher selves and act accordingly.

I believe it's possible it could be a real place, but wouldn't a metaphor just be something you'd expect God to pop on you?
