Cats don't always smile. I can really tell when my Simon is in a mood because he has a grumpy face on him. When he is in a good mood you can see a smile and showing some love.

Sad kitty face is obvious, ears are down, eyes are sad, whiskers aren't perky. If your kitties are happy, they are most likely smiling unconsciously. They do other things, like jumping up and hissing at the air, or bite you on the head, to mess with you.

Cat's open there eyes wide and stare when they are not happy. A happy cat closes their eyes and lifts their head. If you do this back it will usually come and rub against you (with it's cheek). Bit like a mating ritual... may worry you a little!

Flattened down ears on mine generally means the're a bit annoyed. Matt-the-cat kinks one ear back when she looks at me as if I am stoopid.

Mine do not always smile.
When they are smiling, their eyes are narrow slits, or closed, and the corners of their mouths turn up.
Observe your cat - you'll see! :-))
