I use to be in the Navy, 12 years of active duty service. I have co-workers that are Retired or former Soldiers, Marines, Airmen, etc.
This jerk, claims he knows everything about the military, when is the proper time to tell him to shut-up and quit making stuff up?

He was yapping on and on about how guys in the Navy can have several wives in other countries. He has no clue how the Navy operates. I sat and listened to his BS.

He was talking about his brother is in the Army and a sniper, but the former Soldier, listened just as I did and said nothing. When he left, he said "He is such an idiot, he has no clue how the Army operates!"

Call him on it. Start asking questions he should know the answer to. Don't accuse him of anything. Do it in front of his friends and point out where he is wrong in a factual way, so that maybe he will learn that he should just shut up.

I've talked with people just like him, he has an acute case of penis envy and probably won't be getting over it any time soon.

I say correct him on what you know. Although former army I know the navy tracks the married sailor if, for nothing else than to insure they are taking care of their family. Stick up for what you know to be true and simply listen to the other BS. By the way anyone can have several wives. Just don't get caught!

Also, you might consider not hanging with this guy if his rants bother you. Or, take him out back!

Being a former Army brat I can relate to some of this. I've had friends who would claim they knew all of these BS facts about military life. What I found to work quite well was to call them out on all the BS. If they say something that you know isn't true, either by fact or by personal experience, call him out on it and tell how it really is. This usually works best in front of a group of people. After a while of getting proven wrong and having his character publicaly humiliated and labeled as an idiot...he'll think twice about what he says.

Well, just as a suggestion? Since this guy's specialty is B.S, why not give a little back! Tell him there is a contest going on back east (somewhere) and the person who writes the story of "their" own time spent in the military, including every bit of drama, names of the men involved, their rank ect. they win a huge prize! If the guy falls for it, and thinks he might win? Then tell him one of the higher ranking guys (a captain?) or whoever, is coming out to the town or city you all live in, to "verify" this guys story! Then see if he squirms, and fidgets, and maybe backs out just a tad. Then tell him it was as much of a B.S. story as the one "he's been telling, and how the hell does it feel? Just an idea...

Push him for details. No matter what he claims, you knew a guy in that unit and he told you that that other guy with the multiple wives is being courtmartialed right now. Ask for names, ranks, etc.and tell him they may need to call his sources as witnesses. Watch him squirm. Keep it up until he changes color at least 3 times and leaves the room. If he's a real idiot, it may take two treatments but eventually he'll learn.

Place a call to General Panic at the Pentagon... he will dispatch Major Pain, known as "Agent Orange" from the special teams branch of the 101st Green Seal Berets to deal with this poser !!"

Know the feeling Shipmate... I knew a guy at our local bar... a "MARINE"... (graduated from boot and got discharged 3 months later) who would hold forth on his "career".

Ya just treat them like a wise Sea-Lawyer... listen politely as you can, let him feel important, then snicker with your brothers after.

WE were allowed multiple WIVES ?? I'm gonna KILL detailer for not informing me of the regulation that I was not IAW...

Personally, I would just tell him he's full of it. I will humor people the first one or two times they try to BS me. But after them, I embarass them to the point that they never do it again. Sometimes, that is the best thing for these kinds of people. He needs to feel important, and by embarassing him, he will be forced to discuss something that he actually knows about or learn something new.

I know what you mean. Just ignore him. Some people think they "know it all" One of my biggest pet peeves is when I see a movie and they have the military uniforms all wrong. Wrong medals, name tags on the wrong side of the uniform........Urggg it drives me crazy. There are a couple of people on Yahoo Q & A who think they know all about the military and have never spent a day in the military. I just ignore them and move on.

Just consider the source. The guy is an idiot. He is trying to impress you with knowledge he does not have. I would answer him, when he comes up with his outrageous theories: " I don't agree with you, but you are entitled to your own interpretation of
the military." Or you could say ;" Can you document that, please."
