I go to a Catholic high school in Central Florida. Today in detention the teacher supervising us called a student a stupid *****. The student's name was pronounced wrong when the teacher was calling roll and he made a comment something like "the name's blah blah blah, dude" and the teacher got mad and said "Don't call me a dude, what's your problem, etc. etc, stupid *****".
I learned after the detention that the teacher got mad because he was Brazilian and apparently dude is an offensive term in Brazil. I don't think that excuse would fly though because we're in America, not Brazil. Any insight would be appreciated.

He probably will end up fired. Teachers have been fired for much less. Never mind calling a student a curseword. He's suppose to keep his cool even when the students are acting like common sense was never invented. After all he's the adult.

If he were in Brazil I would understand but as you said he is not. This should definelty not be accepted. If you went to his country and said something offensive without knowing, I'm sure they wouldn't tolerate it. As an educator in the United States of America he should know what's right from wrong in this country.

Maybe. However in Brazil, being called a stupid ***** is actually a compliment there. It gets lost in the translation. Call him a stupid ***** to let him know that you're in the know!

That teacher should be fired, but if you are in a private school it may or may not happen- depending on how desperately teachers are needed.

isn't your avatar of Anne Frank? (no, a teacher can't do that anywhere...even if it IS true).
