"Mercedes" in Spanish means "Mercies" in English.
Mercedes is a female given name of Spanish derivation (from "María de las Mercedes", Mary of Mercies (the Virgin Mary))

Merced means mercy. But the term "Su merced" was used many years ago to refer very politely to a person.
But mercedes comes from the name of a Virgin. Virgen the las mercedes.
