Wow, previous answers seem to lean toward drug OD's...

Put simply, dilation means to open. Your pupils can dilate, and so does a woman's cervix when she's giving birth.

In the case of your eyes, it simply means that your constricting muscle in your iris relaxes, making your pupil much larger and letting in more light. There are a few causes for this naturally, as well as medically:

The 'fight or flight' reflex is the most basic (aside from simply walking into a dark room). When the adrenaline starts pumping your eyes dilate in order to take in everything they can.

Your ophthalmologist will usually dilate your eyes in order to take a look at the inside of the eye. We do this with dilating drops, they usually last 4-8 hours, and the world is a much brighter place during that time (always bring sunglasses to the eye doctor for the trip home :-P)

It is true that drugs can dilate the pupils, but it's usually a secondary response from your body's reaction to the drug. Or brain damage. That's why the paramedics always check pupils. If one pupil reacts to light and the other doesn't, that's a good indicator of brain damage.

If you have any other questions about your eyes, let me know :-)

The pupil is the black center of the eye that regulates the amount of light that enters the eye. Pupils normally dilate in response to lowers levels of light. Other conditions can cause this effect.

1. Drug overdose (stimulants, large amounts of barbiturates, and some hallucinogens
2. Heat exhaustion
3. Brain damage or spinal injury

If you mean on someone else...it means they are on drugs of some kind.

I saw some students with dilated eyes in one of my classes, and mentioned it in the staffroom, and discovered what dilated eyes meant....
