most likely.
many hotels do accept walk-ins, but if you're going to a city where a big event is taking place and many of the rooms are booked, then a walk-in will be out of luck.

No, if you are willing on not having a place to stay for the night. Depending on what event is happening in the city, lodging sometimes is unavailable at any price for miles around. Different hotel/motels have different reservation policies. Some don't charge you for not showing up, if it is not guaranteed. Others require you to show up by a certain time, or you will be charged. Always ask.

Not necessarily. At certain times of year and at certain hotels it's definitely advisable, but it's best to check with the hotel you're considering if they require you to make a reservation. If you are prepared to be disappointed and have other options that you could use, then just turn up.

No, I have never traveled with hotel accomodations ahead of time. You just have to be flexible and understanding that not all places will have rooms available. I've found a lot of great bed and breakfasts that I might have overlooked had I arranged everything beforehand.

Yes. And no matter if you intend to pay with cash or credit card, you need to use a credit card to make the reservation.

No. You need a reservation only if you want to guarantee yourself a room.
If there are rooms available (vacant), any hotel will welcome you with open arms. Bring money though.
