Look for a melon that has little or no green on it. Press against the stem end & see if it gives a little. Then smell the stem end. You are checking to see if you can smell CANTELOPE It should smell like RIPE CANTELOPE.

I've been told that when the skin is mostly white rather than green between the "veins" it is ripe. Also the touch and smell at the stem end as others have already said.

Hold the melon in your non-dominant hand. Press in on the spot where the stem was connected, and then smell that area. If the spot isn't firm and the smell is sweet, you have a good melon.

If the melon feels really soft it is over ripe. Press on the "top" where the vine was attached. If that has some "give" when you press in, the melon is ready to eat.

you can feel the part where the stem is suppose to be. like nudge it and see if it soft. if it is then its ripe. some cantalopes have distinct strips that go around the melon. when the stripes are gone then it means that it is ready to be eaten.

Tap the melon lightly to make sure it's firm...also, smell it---it should smell like fresh melon, if it smells rotten, or it's soft, it's no good.

Scratch its belly-button, then sniff. If it's ripe it will have that riiiiiiipe cantaloupe aroma.

Shake it vigorously and if you can hear the seeds rattling it's ready to eat.
