That is not advisable as batteries can leak and damage your electronic equipment.. as they r in constant touch with the circuitry and have electrochemical reaction going on in them even though you are not using them.
So its Best to take them out and keep them safe and Dispose them safely for the benefit of our Environment.

I know that in some of these cases the batteries can begin to leak acid which can actually not only be hazardous to you or children that touch them to take them out, but it can actually break the device that they were in*

if they are left for a considerable period of time say 6mths or more they could start to leak . this is when you see a white fur develope round the end of the battery next to the contacts

yes the side effects are..mouldy batteries leaking stuff outta them nd goin rusty nd crap..i shud know coz i left 4 batteries in a talking fish nd they got melted into it :)
