Why Spanish? There are more than 100 languages spoken in California alone. In the US there are upwards of 200. Why Spanish and not Korean or German or Russian, etc? We need English as a unifying language so we can speak to each other. But why would kids in North Dakota need Spanish?
I'm all for bilingual, but I chose French and German when I went to school. I certainly don't think those who are bilingual because we paid their education when their families weren't legally here, draining funds from our own kids that might have been spent on second languages, should be raising this point.

It is indeed a worthy goal. Fortunately programs like Dora the Explorer and Diego are teaching young children Spanish. I try to incorporate Spanish in my regular class through cursive writing. Unfortunately, many districts simply don't have the funds (or the time) to pay for a Spanish teacher. It hasn't been taught in my district for some time on the elementary level. If you're sincere about making this a goal of your own, attend local board of education meetings and make your concerns known. :)

I'd be really nice, specially since a lot of kids that speak more than one language tend to be more exposed to other cultures as well. Depending on their choice there is Spanish, French, Italian, Hindi or Japanese. I honestly believe that it should be encouraged, but although some schools allow it their funds aren't sufficient. It's weird how much more Fooball and Basketball classes get. Either way, if the kid's interested enough, he'll find a way to learn whatever language he wants, too bad he would've missed the most awesome time-span to learn.

It doens`t matter where you live. If something is not done to stop the invasion, noone will be able to read the english name on your tombstone a hundred years from now. Spanish will be the only language spoken here by then. And history will lay it at the feet of the current government`s inability to do anything ! They will kill the fountain of wealth that english speaking peoples built here.

I read all of the responses to your question.. and I have to say, although the responses that you got were rude and probably not what you expected, I think that you are great for posting this question. I would love to learn Spanish, and if I had a little extra time, I would. Unfortunately, not everyone is going to agree with you. They are going to be against it "just because" and they are going to bring you down about it. We all have the right to believe in whatever we want, and if this is what you believe in, then stick with it. As negative as these people choose to be, I have a really strong feeling that in a few years time, everyone will be learning Spanish. They will be the ones looking stupid in the end.

It would sure be something. I don't really agree with the problem many Americans have against any language that is not english, it's as if they are threatened by another languages. i don't lnow, but everytbody in the world knows that Americans usually only speak one language and they will not learn any other at all. There are many countries in the world where more than one language coexist harmoniously and peacefully without demeaning that country unity at all. Why does it happen in the US, i don't know, I, presonally, think that the aversion to foreign languages and the absolut demand that everybody else learns theirs is irracional.

Why should my child have to learn Spanish? She has better things to do than learn a language that she will never need. The way I see it, wouldn't it be great if the Mexicans learned English like most other countries do?

Screw that. Why should we have to learn a language we have no interest in? And before you call me out for supporting laziness, I did not say we shouldn't speak multiple languages. But give them a choice. Also, I am learning German, Norwegian, Latin, Icelandic, Swedish, and Dutch, so don't call me lazy. I have no ancestry in any Spanish speaking country, so why should I have to learn Spanish? My state doesn't have an overwhelming amount of Spanish speaking tourists, so it isn't neccessary to support our economy. As a citizen, I have the right to learn whatever damn language I want.

Wouldn't it be an even better goal if we got ALL foreigners to speak English......and not the Queen's English mind you. American English. And even more so if the foreigners are living in the United States. They want to be Americans? Quit talking like you are from somewhere else. How embarrassing and how rude!
