Watch the Nanny shows. You have to be consistent! How are you talking to her? She's getting the smart mouth somewhere.

If you want to teach your child that violence is the answer spank away.. Teaching your child that might makes right is obviously such a great lesson.. (smart mouth intended)

However if you want to teach your child that being a smart mouth is not acceptable I suggest you look and see where she is getting it... Do either you or someone else close to your child have a smart mouth? Where is she learning the tendancy? Can you or the person she is learning from change your behavior to show her a different way to deal with life? Children act in ways they have observed others act, as a parent sometimes your child picks up your bad habits and can drive you insane with them.. Change your behavior and thiers will follow...

Get a consistant form of disipline in place so the child knows what behavior is not acceptable and what the penalty for misbehavior will be.. Follow through with the disipline consistanty even religiously... Never make an idol threats... They ruin your credibility with your child(ren)...

Disipline in a calm manner, even if you have to take a short time-out yourself before disiplining...

Changing a behavior takes time don't expect instant results but keep up the consistant measures the behavior will modify...

When my youngest was 5, we had a smart mouth problem. I bought a toothbrush - the "bad mouth brush". A miniscule drop of dish soap on the brush and a swipe of the offenders tongue worked wonders. As a matter of fact, I only had to use it once. He didn't want the "bad mouth brush" ever again!

Put some hot sauce on his tongue as punishment after he ignores the threats. It is the modern rendition of washing your mouth out with soap. I know some will think its cruel, but its just as bad as eating a cinnamon candy and this wont mentally scar him for life, so relax people that are going to reply to my reply, geez..

What worked for me was stop paying attention to it and ignore the child for at least five minutes when acting out

Just be patient and give them lost of love. I have raised 5 kids on my own and I know its not easy. Take it one day at a time.

what you should do is be the parent. Show her who is boss. Talk to her calmly keep giving her time outs. Spank her if she needs it and if she gets out of control talk to your mom.

Tough love. Tell her you will not respond unless she talks to you in a courteous and respectful manner.
