Cirrhosis of the liver is scarring. It causes a thick layer of scar tissue to form within the liver, eventually hardening the entire organ. When a person has cirrhosis, the scarring develops over time and as it does it weakens the liver's ability to perform it's necessary functions. It's like trying to run oil through a clogged filter...all the bad stuff can't be flushed through. Where your body is concerned, toxins are unable to be flushed from your body. Most people die before their liver hardens due to this fact.

Cirrhosis is a chronic disease that is the result of slow deterioration of the liver. In this disease, damage to the liver from one of many causes changes its its structure gradually, and the liver becomes progressively less able to carry out its function, which include regulating the content of the blood.
In the very early stages, while there are still plenty of healthy liver cells, symptoms are mild. As the diease progresses, loss of appetite and weight, nausea, vomiting, general malaise and weakness, indigestion, and abdominal distention all become increasingly pronounced. There is a tendency to bleed and bruise easily that leads to nosebleeds. Small red, spidery marks called spider nevi may appear on your face, arms and upper trunk. In the later stages jaundice may occur. Men can lose interest in sex, their breast inlarge, and they become impotent. Women usually stop having periods.

its similar to hepatitis c, in that it attacks the liver rapidly and harshly. The difference is that it is caused by drinking way too much alcohol to the point where the liver cannot function any longer and turns very hard. It is not contagious. And its spelled cirrhosis, btw.. :D
