It basically boils down to the point of immigrants conforming to American standards, not Americans conforming to thier standards. Everyone should be allowed to speak whatever language they want to, but they also should be able to read and write in English. I, as an American citizen, should not be required to learn a different language or provide specialized training in foreign languages in order to placate the politically correct. I myself speak several languages as well as English, and learned them in order to communicate with people of other nationalities. However, it was not a requirement, just a desire on my part.

One language should be the way things are done in the USA, and that should be English which is the language our Constitution was written in. I wonder how many billions of tax payer dollars are spent on printing government forms in Spanish. If you want a divided nation just keep up the two language routine. Look at what it's done for Canada.

It would not be against the law if you spoke another language besides English. What it would do is lower the costs of schools, printing etc I am all for it,hell I thought it was already the official language of the USA until a few years ago when I found out it wasn't.
Most people in this country that are here LEGALLY speak
English.Make congress pass a law designating English as the USAs official language.ASAP

I do not know if you really understand what they are trying to do. I do believe that English should be our national language. This is America and English is the language spoken here. I do not know nor have I heard of a law where it will be punishable to speak another language. That would be absurd. America is a melting pot of many languages, and as such, many languages will be spoken. Does that mean that we need to cater to all of those languages? OF COURSE NOT. You can speak any language you wish to speak, however, to be part of mainstream society, you need to speak English. You cannot expect everyone to accommodate to YOUR language. We are in America, our language is English. Learn it! I speak Spanish and that is my native tongue. I also speak English. It was difficult when I first arrived and did not understand what was being said, but I knew if I wanted to participate, I needed to learn the language. It should be the same with everyone.

Of course English should be spoken here. It's "our" language. Living in Ohio, I should not have to choose which language I want to use at the ATM.
It's becoming a real mess here and the time to worry about inconveniencing everyone else is OVER. We are tired of being politically correct to the point of losing our own country.

There is nothing wrong if one has a grasp of a second language, but we should make it mandatory that all public discourse or written exchange of a business or government nature be conducted in English. The erosion of our language, and the appeasement of a foreign culture, has always spelled the death sentence for great nations. Let’s not repeat the mistakes of empires before us.

Many countries have an 'official' language. Even some where the 'official' language is the most widely spoken! Figure that one out. Getting arrested for say 'Hola' to someone I think is a bit extreme. I don't think making English the official or only language is going to change reality - it might make some people happy, but I don't see the point personally.

Oh yes, how racist.
And Germany is horrible because their official language is German.
And England, because their official language is English.
What about Russia? China? India? Iran, the official language is Persian, and yet Arabic is still taught in schools, along with English.
Having an "official" language does NOT mean that no other language is acceptable. It simply means that everyone who comes to the US should LEARN ENGLISH.
Is it REALLY that snooty?
If so, then every other country in the world is snooty, and we're just now catching up.

Many countries allready have a NATIONAL language. And as far as being arrested for using Spanish that's not gonna happen. What you would see happen is that there would be no more Press 1 for English 2 for Spanish. There wouldn't be any more Bi-language Menu's. No more Bi-Language signs in stores ect ect ect. When you go for your drivers licenses it'll be in English Only and Other government activities. In my personal opinion it's about time.
