Put him in another room while you are gone, and you need to kitten-proof the house...because kittens will be KITTENS and get into your prized possessions if you don't. Better make sure if you have plants that they're out of reach too...some plants are highly toxic.

No. Put it in the bathroom or other enclosure with toys and that is safe.
First, kitten proof your home by getting down on the kittens level (all fours) and look at things that might be swinging or look appealing to a kitten. If it's not safe remove it, hide it, or throw it away.
However do get your kitten used to being kenneled for an hour or two every few days. The reason most rescues want people to get kittens in pairs is because they are VERY active and will be destructive if bored. I would seriously consider getting another kitten his age. Cats are nocturnal and active at night. I have to put mine outside my room to keep him from bugging me. Getting another kitten will give him someone to play with while you aren't around. Also two kittens aren't as much work as two puppies. You will need extra food and toys but it will be worth it when you have to go away because they cats will be happier and you will too so your stuff will be destroyed. I Kenneled my cat as a kitten for the same reason - but your kitten will just cry and cry which will keep you awake also. Luckily my roommate adopted a kitten and they were happy, frolicing and stalking each other at night.

not a cage but if you have a big box, just cut it in half and just put some cozy blankets in there and some toys. Make sure that your kitten does not stay in the half-box for too long. Kittens are very social and need alot of love and attention.

It's really not a good idea. It's mean to put a cat in a cage . They need to roam around and they need to feel safe. Try to put your things in high places or use a spray bottle and spray him a little . It's not cruel to do that. It's just tell him not to do that. He'll get the point and stop.

You can make a pen or get a really big kennel and put the kitten in there every time you leave and every time you go to sleep.

Dear, cats are meant to roam about the house. Confine your kitten to one room while you are gone or asleep. What did you think a kitten did, stood stock still all day? Rhetorical.
