Most of the people in prison are mentally ill. Closing down the lunatic asylums was part of the problem.

No the EU deportation policy is to blame for our prison overcrowding - they recently suggested that all illegal immigrants should be sent to a remote island somewhere for processing - well they have it's called the UK. Why else would immigrants pass through numerous EU countries to seek asylum in the UK - they are supposed to seek asylum in the first country they come to after leaving their own.

old know it all has the right idea.People who should be housed in homes for the mentally ill are now housed in prisons.No the old colonies are not to blame for over crowding.The number of people in prison is only 80,000.And i say only because we now have a population of 60 million folk.Why are our prisons full?Because we have not got enough prisons.
Lets build a few more.Yes there will be a cost but ask yourself the following question:Do you want to see lawbreakers in prison and being punished or on the streets? Your choice.

I don't know. I think its the fact that the government doesn't want to spend money on programs in the prisons. Prisoners could be working while in prison but instead they sit around doing nothing all day.

Yes we should start deporting to the australian and american colonies again, after all those countries are woefully under populated.

If you're going to deport people as a punishment, it helps if you don't send them to a holiday destination.
