Many farangs had resided in Chiangmai, as it has cooler clime whole year through. As one of the major town in Thailand, it is definitely more modern than others, like Chiangrai. Only setback is that is is pretty popular with tourists and may get crowded during holiday seasons.

Chiangrai is much further, so you do get less crowd there. It does have nice mountain resorts with close to nature living.

So you get trade-off between the 2.

As for apartment rental, you can try the links and make enquiry from the numbers stated. Usually for long tern stay, the rates do come down quite a fair bit. Sorry cannot help you on this.

im half thai and i was born in Chiang Mai, theres lots of farangs that live there, its a great place to socalise and to go shopping. It used to be the capital of Thailand before it became Bangkok so its a very developed city, there will be plenty of people to meet and to get to know, northern thais speak alot faster than southern thais so if you are not sure about tha language maybe spend some time in the south picking it up before going to the north where people speak fast (unless you can already speak it, you know Farang so im guessing u know a bit of Thai lol)

This page will give you an idea of what to look for. Personally I would stay for a week or 2 and look at different places to see what suits you
