Is a Bordetella booster necessary for dogs every year ? Or is it just for dogs being kenneled?

The bordetella injection is only for dog that are kenneled often. It is usually given every six months to a year. Unless you kennel your dog fairly often then it doesn't need it. It's just to prevent against the kennel cough which is very contagious in kennels.

Bordetella - or Kennel Cough Vaccine - is for dogs who are or will be kenneled several times during the year, for dogs who are often around other dogs (show, agility), or for dogs who live in multiple dog households.

IMO it is an uneccessary vaccine. I have had dogs at shows and trials for 30 years and they have gotten kennel cough twice. Both times they got it was the only time I have ever given bordatella. LOL!
When dogs get kennel cough it is like a cold and doesn't seem to bother them to much, although it sounds awful. You do have to watch as there is a chance they could get pneumonia. I don't think the risks of kennel cough outweigh the risks of an uneccessary vaccine.

This vaccine is only good for 6-7 months. The American Animal Hospital Association

recommends getting the vaccine two weeks before the dog is to be boarded.

talk to your vet. If your dog is never around any other animals and never goes outside then it may be safe. There are extended versions of this vaccine as well
