We'll be using it to watch HD DVDs and TV. Most of the viewers will be within a 30 degree arc and 6-8 feet from the set. The room is fairly bright in the day as we don't have curtains for a window that gets mid-day sun. I'm looking for the best value unit versus the best or the cheapest.

Ok Everyone that just bashed Plasma has not a clue what they are talking about.
Samsung only makes a 40" inch LCD not a 42"
LCD do not last longer than plasma and Plasma has the better picture quality.
Sony does not make Consumer Plasmas any more. They make their LCDs with Samsung.

OK now If you want a Plasma I would recommend the Samsung for 2 reasons. well 3
1. Samsung uses a dark glass much like the one that comes on the much more expensive Pioneer. That will reduce glare from the midday sun in your room.
2. Samsung offers some of the best TVs for the Money. You will find that the Pioneer will be the most and hitachi will probably be next after that the LG. All great TVs. Now the Panasonic, Toshiba, and Samsung will make up the core of Plasma TVs. Kinda like The Ford, Chevy, and Dodge of TVs. You will find the Best quality and performance out of these 3 Tvs.
3. I own one. Samsung HPR 4272. I absolutly love this tv. I sit 8' from mine and I too have a southern facing Bay window that allow alot of light in. My wife can be very picky and she has never said anything but praise for the TV.

Oh its actually 2 times the diagnal size of the Tv and that gives you 7 feet 84/12= 7

Good Luck in you TV puchasing Adventure. I recommend these 2 Samsungs.

If you're going to get a 42", you should get a LCD instead of a plasma. Better quality, lasts longer. LG is a good brand.

I'd say 42" is too large.
The rule of thumb is viewing distance should be 3 times the screen diagonal.
At approx. 7 feet, the screen size should be 28".

I think LCD is a betr choice compared to Plasma TV's, as they r long lasting and in LCD's Samsung and Hitachi r good..

A 28 year previous isn't of "this era". i'm 17 and that i'm component to this era, and confident, i will admit, maximum everybody is exceptionally stupid. No, your 28 year previous son ought to have widespread extra perfect. in case you hadn't given it to him, you have gotten sued him. by way of his reaction, i understand he knew precisely what he did and that it became very incorrect. i don't understand what he became thinking, yet a 28 year previous ought to in no way do something so silly, and you have each and every genuine to be disillusioned.
