have always encouraged him to use his gift of music for this purpose (he plays guitar) But he still also wants to play his rock music and possibly be in a rock band as well, should I make him choose one or the other? Does it matter that he does both? I'm hoping he'll eventually feel and get into more of the Godly music and make up his mind on his own, or should I make it for him?

Play worship??

Perhaps to play music for worship at a youth Bible Group

Sounds good. Is the group "good" too?

Understandably you may have concerns about his still being interested in some of the "secular" rock music. Personally, sometimes I can't even understand the words ... guess I'm fortunate. But likely if he doesn't be into drugs, rebellion, etc. then maybe just be content for him to deal with the "both".

Being in the youth BIBLE STUDY group and if he is enjoying playing with their band .... maybe the "Word" will speak to him about the other ... and maybe some of the "leaders" of the group might, too. Perhaps he might take it better from them than from his "mother"?

Why can't rock music be Godly? I grew up in a Christian church and we always listened to Christian punk rock et al--heck, some of the good ones I still listen to.

It depends on who he's playing with. You should be more concerned about the character of his friends and associates than the label on his music. That will make more of a long-term difference. If it's possible, it would be good not to force a choice unless it is seriously interfering with school work or other more important activities. Your son is going to be using the skills that you have taught him to make his decisions. I'd tread carefully here... and pray much for patience and wisdom.

Hoping the best for you...

If your son is old enough let him make his own decision. When I was growning up we were involved with church and I listed to rock music and my parents didn't mind. So let him decided for himself . As long as he goes to church and is saved and been baptize I believe that if you pray God will show him the right way.

My husband and I are involved in Church of Christ and we still listen to rock music so it is okay.

rock music isnt going to hurt him, if you make up his mind for him all it will do is make him rebelous. (dont missunderstand me i think parents do have the final say and that you should be able to say no if you think it will be bad for him) this kinda depends on his age and maturity. if you think he can handle it go for it. however if you think that the rock music will lead him away from God (not to be confused with just the music) then by all means make up his mind for him

Yes it matters. If you want him to get sucked into the world of body piercings, tattoos and showing of his BVDs, guide him toward the rock band.

Been there, done than, bought the shirt.

You are the parent for a reason.

The worst decision any parent can make is making their kid's decisions for them. Let him do what he wants. Who knows, he might throw the two together and start a Christian rock band.

Let him make up his own mind. If you try to make it for him he is liable to put it down altogether. Focus your praise on the gospel he plays and downplay the rock. Chances are if he is a teenager, he will grow out of the rock faze as his faith in God grows stronger.
