I live in Puerto Rico.

I have tried the water trick, or the "moat" but these buggers here in Puerto Rico can swim...I swear! I have tried it and still they make their way into the food. My other problem is that my dog is a really slow eater, quite finicky so I can't feed him at a certain time and take it away because he mainly eats at night in small amounts. UGH!

Buy 1 bowl that is quite a bit bigger than the usual bowl. Fill it with water and set the food bowl in it. The ants will drown before they get to the food.

If the ants are getting around the food bowl, it probably means your dogs are not readily eating whatever it is you feed them...try to space out the times between feedings, so as to have the dogs eat their food as soon as you put it down.

Move the bowl regularly from one place to another. Or, you can play 'fetch' with the dog before he eats, so as to make him a little hungry. I usually give my dogs a treat after a little exercise or game of fetch. In that way, the dogs get their taste buds going and begin looking for more food and hence, the bowl.

The point is, the bowl is not being touched and the ants are getting into the food. They need to eat their food immediately after you put the bowl in place. Boiled chicken cut into little pieces placed on top of the food can start them eating.

I have found that when we have ants around our dogs food bowl is to use some pinesol in that area, and clean their bowls with hot soapy water. The ants don't like oily film on their feet, so if you can find a cleaner that is safe around pets that has some citrius to it you can also try that. Or there should be some type of indoor/outdoor chemical that you can use and that should be avaliable at the hardware store. Good luck!

Oh my......

Well now I have read you have some nasty ants where you live...

I live in the States...
I trried this once for ants and it worked

Put down some Instant grits along the ant trails...
It has to be instant and they have to be dry if they get wet clean it up and put down fresh dry stuff

The idea is the ants will carry back grits to the queen ..she eats they swell in her tummy as they are instant and boom no queen,,, no queeen no ants

Also I have heard others use Cayeene pepper powder along the ant trail but if your dog sniffs it or licks it he will be very unhappy

Also... this will not get the queen but may get a lot of teh little buggers...

Put a shallow saucer of MT dew soda or Mello yellow on the floor where ants come in... in the dish with the soda put about 2 TBS of Dawn dish soap.... mix it in
put a little reg soda outside the dish goig up tot he dish so they get the idea where the good stuff is

This works super well for bees and somewhat for ants

OK well GOod Luck!

The water trick sounds good. You could also try putting only enough food for the dog to eat immediately. Then there is no attraction for the ant, and the dog stays skinny.

** Grate the skin of a cucumber and sprinkle it around the dog food. ants hate cucumber..
** Put a ring of double sided tape around the bowl..
** Ants don't like baby powder and spearmint gum. You can prinkle baby powder whereever the ants are or just leave spearmint gum sticks and the ants will disappear.
** You can put the bowl in a pan of water..to make a mote around it..
** Ants hate cinnamon! you can sprinle it around..
** also, bay leaves..curmble around the bowl..
** Mix equal parts of white sugar and baking soda on a saucer. Place it anywhere you see ants. The ants eat the mixture and the baking soda turns into CO2 and kills the pests. What's best is you don't have to worry if your kids or pets get into it.

The water thing works well. get a bowl or even a Tray that you can set your dogs dish in and put water around it, it doesnt have to be alot of water, like a cm, ants will not drown in the water as others have said, they will just not go in it. you may also want to try to find out how thee getting into your house, maybe think about putting bait stations outside somewhere your dog wont be able to get to them

mix a box of borax laundry det, with 10 lbs sugar, mix well, pour a thin line of stuff all the way round outside of house, be sure to not leave an opening anywhere, the ants will be drawn to this and will leave the inside of ur house, do this once every 30 to 45 days depending on how heavy ants are, works for me.

Set your dog's food bowl in another, larger bowl filled with water to keep the ants away from his food. You can buy petfood bowls with a channel around them for water also, but I'm not sure where you could get one in Puerto Rico, sorry.

There is a natural way to get rid of ants. Don't know if this will harm your dog or not, but putting baking soda to where the ants are, that will get rid of them.
