for starters, how about the disparities in character between the old and new testaments? Jealous smiting vs Loving father figure? world destroying rage followed by... "take my son and nail him to a tree." Truthfully people, if a close member of your family acted like this, wouldn't you call for the men in white coats?

What a great question! Thank you so much for posting it! And to answer it, I'm not sure if I'd call the men in the white coats but I'd certainly try and get my family member some psychiatric treatment.
You can look at just about any bible story and either come up with a passive-aggressive behavioral dysfunction or worse, form a case for psychopathy. Not only that but you can make a case that god is an incredibly poor judge of character or just plain stupid.
Look at the story of Samson. Here's a guy who has been blessed with incredible strength. Not only that, his mother, a barren woman, was visited by an angel of god and told that she would have a son - one greatly blessed by god but that no one is to touch a hair on his head. And what happens? Sure enough, Samson is born with "god in his hair" and he does have super-human strength. And what does he do with it?
Samson is a womanizer and enjoys the company of prostitutes. He eventually takes up with Delila, who makes a deal with the Philistines for a whole lot of silver. All she has to do it find out the source of Samson's strength. So she bugs him about. He lies to her a total of three times. Each time the Philistines try what Delila suggests with zero effect on Samson. Finally, after Delila nags the "shyte" out of him, telling him that he's mocking her, he gives it up! He tells her about the hair issue! Call me crazy but if you were Samson and Delila has sicked the Philistines on you a total of three times, wouldn't you be just a little cautious about the girl?
Now tell me this. If you're god and you go to all the trouble of telling Samson's mother that she will have a child via divine intervention, wouldn't you be just a tad more picky about the outcome? If not, what does this say about you? Are you a bad judge of character or just plain stupid?

no - how do you treat a misbehaving child
ask them to fix the problem
punish them for being wrong
through it all show them love
old T. book of leviticus has more love in it than gospel of John. God is telling you how to come to him throughout the entire book.
here is the summary in 1 verse.
be holy as I am holy
pretty simple - people need the white coats for acting like how you descibe

You are forgetting that more than one person wrote the Bible.
Even if you believe in divine inspiration, there is bound to be discrepancies in how one author describes a feeling from how another one would describe that same feeling.
