Im going to mexico next year i was wondering what i needed to have in order to cross the border. Im from america

It depends on how you are traveling and when/where you are going.
If you are traveling by air or sea, you will need a passport to get back into the US effective as of 01 Jan, 2007.
IF you are staying less than 72 hours, IF you are staying in the 'free zone" (less than 60-70ish miles from the US border in Baja California as far south as Ensenada or to Sonora as far south as Puerto Penasco aka; Rocky Point), IF you are crossing by land (personal vehicle or bus) and IF you are a US citizen, all you need is a photo ID until either 01 Jan or 01 June, 2008 after which you will need a passport to return to the US (there is some debate on the date - originally it was Jan but US Congress voted 'yea' to push it to June as passport services cannot possibly fulfill all passport requests by January. Homeland Security is still using the January, 2008 date - while Congress passed the bill, the vote may still be pending in the US Senate).

Ditto for travel to Canada.

No, you do not have to have a visitor's visa, but you will have to fill out what is called a "Tourist Card," unless you are planning on living there more than the allowed time without a visa. MOST airlines will give you these on the plane, or you can fill one out at the airport. It's not like China where you have to apply way in advance. (We go twice a year to Mexico, and have always had to fill out the Visa) Check the US State Department's web page for what identification is necessary for entry, it was at one time your birth certificate and photo ID, but I think they are going to the mandatory passport soon.

No. You don't typically need to even show ID. But if you plan on staying in Mexico for more than 30 days, or plan on travelling deep into Mexico, you will need a passport.

No, you don't need visa to Mexico unless you want to stay there for a long time. Be sure to bring as much document as possible. ID, Driver's License, Birth Certificate, etc. =)

I live in ca and I've been to TJ a bunch of times and never needed a visa. But when I took a flight from TJ to La Paz I had to have my passport. Hope that helps.
