Don't listen to the negative replies you'll receive for joining up. Be proud of the decision you made.
My hubby is a Drill Sergeant for the Army. I can't tell you what other branches are like. BCT is alot of hard work and mind games. You'll be dog tired at the end of every day. You'll learn ow to zero and fire a weapon. You'll spend some time in the field. You'll learn basic combative. Do the gas chamber. (Be prepared to be sick!!) You'll do PT every single day. You'll also receive 3 square meals a day. Along with that, you'll learn to work as a team and some medical training. Expect road marches and alot of running.
There's not really anything that you can be told to prepare you. Just go in the right mindset. Listen to the Drills. Work as a team and count on your battle buddy. Graduation day, it's all worth it.
Good luck!!

I was in the navy so I can only speak for that. You didn't specify any branch so I can say you will learn how to take criticism and punishment for other peoples mistakes. You will learn that you are not a star nor special and you are not a hero so don't try to be. You will learn that your opinion is irrelevant so don't try to influence the decision making. You will learn that emotional outburst are childish, irrational and must be contained. You will learn that any decision making and independent thinking is to be saved for a later time like when you are not in Basic. You will learn to pay attention to details, to do only as you are told and to never take initiative (wait until you are told to do it before you do anything.) If you have the rare gift of being able to listen and do as you are told the first time then you will do good and will only have to suffer for other peoples mistakes. Learn to help others while there is time. The physical part is actually a blessing in disguise because it a chance for you to work off some stress. I wish the navy basic was more physical. Overall shut up listen and do what you're told and you will have an inexpressible amount of fun and learning experience.

Which service are you joining? That will make a little bit of difference. I can speak for the Air Force basic. The first couple days are inprocessing, and making sure you have your shots and stuff like that. You take classes to learn about the service. You do a lot of exercising to make sure you are up to the fitness standards. You basically learn how to be in the military. You learn little things that you wouldn't think you needed to learn like how to march, and when to salute, the rank structure. It's not that bad when you look back at it, but it's feels kind of horrible while you are there. Especially the first week, but it always get better.

You'll exercise A LOT, you'll learn how to be a soldier, fire and maintain weapons, you'll learn basic life saving skills, you'll learn how to work as a team and help each other.
It's the hardest thing you do, but one in which you'll always remember and cherish.
I'm not going to throw sugar at you, it's tough, but the Drill Sergeants want to ensure you know what you are doing when you get to your first duty station.
Go for it! My time in the military was great, and my spouse is currently a Drill Sergeant!

Basic training will be one of the most memorable experiences in the military. It's the transition from civilian to soldier. You will learn basic soldiering. From weapons training to military history. You will gain lifelong memories and lifelong friends.
Everyone's experience is different though. It depends on how old you are and what kind of character you have.
Don't believe the hype! You don't get broken down nor brainwashed.
Good Luck.

First you should explain what branch you are talking about going into.
For the AF is both physical and mental. Its constant stress in order to prepare you for the duties that you will be in charge of.
Well if you are going have a great time. It seems like a lot when you are going through it but you will know that you acheived something great come graduation.

9 weeks of demanding training, up early in the morning, bed late at night. Alot of classes, marching, physical training and team work oriented events. You learn attention to detail, comraderie, basic first aid and survival skills, Weapons traning and small unit tactics. You'll enjoy it after the first week when your no longer sore and your sleep is adjusted. You'll make memories you will never forget and lifelong friends. Have fun, i'd do it all over again. And to the first liberal that answered your question with a useless tirade. Screw you!

Hey, I'm looking at joining the service, so i've been up on it. It would be a long and boring answer if i were to just list it all off, so just go to goarmy.com and you can look at the agenda for basic. seems pretty tough, but my buddies who served in korea and iraq, 1 with 3 purple hearts, told me that they aren't nearly as strict as it seems. the marines is a different story though.

Basic training is different for all sectors of the military. You have to be more specific on what branch of military.
